50-pound muskie brings angler to tears in Minnesota

    By The Associated Press

Article Last Updated: 10/31/2007 09:32:34 AM CDT

Joe Kiritschenko said he cried after catching a 50-pound muskie on Lake Mille Lacs this weekend, but it wasn’t because he was 4 pounds short of the state record.

Instead, Kiritschenko regretted that his grandfather was not alive to see it. He had fished for big northerns and muskies with Peter, a St. Paul sign painter, for 20 years—until he died in 2001 at the age of 86.

“He meant everything to me,” said Kiritschenko, whose real father left the family. “I called him Papa. He would have loved to see a fish like this.”

Kiritschenko, of Woodbury, eventually weighed the fish on a state certified scale. It was 50 pounds, 55 inches long and had a 27 1/2-inch girth. The state record muskie is 54 pounds, caught in 1957 in Lake Winnibigoshish.

Only a few muskies 50 pounds or more have been caught, weighed and documented in Minnesota in the past two decades.

“It’s a rarity,” said Jerry Younk, a Minnesota Department of Natural Resources muskie researcher based in Bemidji, of Kiritschenko’s fish.

Using a formula based on length, the muskie could have been 14 to 20 years old, Younk said.

Kiritschenko is like many muskie anglers in that he believes in releasing his catches so they can grow bigger, but his 50 pounder was hooked deep and couldn’t be revived.

“It was belly up,” Kiritschenko said. “I have mixed emotions about keeping it because I know there will be a backlash from other anglers who don’t believe in keeping fish. But I didn’t have a choice.”

Kiritschenko was fishing alone around 11:30 a.m. Saturday on the northwest corner of Mille Lacs when the muskie hit. He was using a 15-inch, cream-colored lure called a Heli Dawg.

He said it didn’t take too long to bring the muskie to the boat, then net it with one hand while holding his rod with the other. “I just scooped it up and fell backwards into the boat,” he said.

Once it was in the boat, he called a fishing buddy, his mother, his sister and his wife. “I told my wife, ‘I finally got him. I got him for Papa.'”

After reading this version of the story, I noticed it was a little different than the printed version. In the printed version they metion the fish had a rapala lodged in his mouth.

Pretty sure that was my crank from last week…..

The word is, from a very reliable source, there were two 55 x 27 inch muskies caught on the pond this weekend. One on the north end, one on the south.

Those are mighty big fish. I’ll be up there Sunday and Monday trying to catch one for myself.

Please don’t spread this outside of this forum but to be honest those mille lacs walleyes are getting a little boring.

I won’t lose any sleep if I don’t catch any more 26″ mille lacs walleyes this fall on a crankbait and trolling rod.

There. I said it. I feel oddly… relieved.

Real walleyes swim in rivers and eat little jigs. Thankfully I’ll be back guiding on the river in a couple weeks.

Cmon’ Rip. Lets see if you can add another hobby…Lots of afternoon muskie lakes in your area. Whatever you do, dont tell your wife it a fish of 10,000 casts. I think mine hit 10,000 this year and she is quite mad! She is a great fisherman, I give her the hot bait and they just wont bite until she gives up and hands it to me then..Oh well, its the other way around with big bucks.

Holy Crap I think I just soiled myself!!!!! Last year a Wisconsin fellow caught a huge 50+ muskie and got allot of crap from “purests” for keeping a fish he worked his whole life to catch, row trolling no less all day for many, many years. Anyways not to change subject on those hogs, CPR is truelly working and from what I read and hear Minnesota has been giving us more 50# fish than any sate or province around

I’ve caught more than a few. They’re a fun fish but I don’t think I’ll be selling anything any time soon. I’m a “more is better” kinda guy. More rods. More tackle. More species of fish.

Amazing fish and stories!! So, with all this hype about the monster muskies in Mille Lacs…..How many of you are going to Mille Lacs this weekend for the chance of a possible state record muskie??? I know its exciting to see these big fish…..but its really not that easy to catch muskies in Mille Lacs. You got to remember there hundreds of muskie anglers on Mille Lacs everyday, and so obviously someone is eventually going to get lucky and catch a 55 inch plus muskie, and not to mention, the best muskie guides in the world are out there in full force everyday of the week. Good luck for those of you who try it though, your going to need it.

Such an unbelievable fish. I’m not sure if he’s holding it or if the fish has him pinned. The girth on that girl is amazing.

Congratulations to all the guys who nailed them last weekend. The time is now and I hope I can make it out and try and beat my PB of 45″ sometime soon.

Im glad this thread didnt turn into a bashing for keeping the fish. I noticed on other sites it got pretty heated. I personally am never planning on keeping one, nor would I put anyone down for keeping one either. Its your right as a MN fishing license holder. If your any type of avid musky angler, I garrantee you have released a heck of alot more ski’s then you have kept. It sure does seem like jealousy is a major factor. I fortunately have never had one die on me (that I know of) but honestly dont know what I would do. Leave it to the birds or give it to a farmer or what. If it was that big, probably donate it to the DNR and get a replica. Congrats to everyone who is still out slingin’. The next month is what seperates the men from the boys. Hopefully, Ill see some of ya out there.
