Moon Rise + Figure 8= Lunge

Looking at the weather yesterday, I just had to get out on the water. With front after front pushing through the area, it just felt like a prime muskie hunting day. I got on the water at 4pm and had the lake to myself, which was a big shock, because that just does not happen very often in the metro anymore. At 5:45 we had our first fish up to the boat, a fat mid 40″s that came off a very deep break. Cabbage and coontail on the top of the hump, and deep water just to the north. This fish came up very hot and took a stab at the bait, but no hooks sunk. We worked this fish for another 20 minutes, and then decided to move on when she never showed herself again. The next spot we hit was a big flat, loaded with browning cabbage in 10ft of water. On my 3rd cast, I see something white, about the size of a silver dollar right under my top raider. About the time I got “what the heck is that” out of my mouth, I realize that it was a fish. This fish had a big white battle wound on the right side of his snout, and I could see it a mile away when the fish started to follow the top raider. This fish came right up to the boat, I went into a 1/2 “J”, to start the figure eight, and the fish was gone…so I thought. I work the “8” for about 7 time around, changing speeds, and depths. On the 9th time around this fish came up and clobbered the top raider. On hook set the fish went nuts, clearing the water by 2 feet. I was standing at the front of the boat, looking eye to eye with this scrappy 40″ lunge. Soon into the net, a quick photo, and she was back in the water to fight another day. I cracked a cold one and replayed what had just happened. I just boated a fish on a figure eight on a top water bait of all things, this is a 1st for me with a top water. This fish ate within minutes of the moon rise, I have been keeping a close eye on the rise and fall patterns of the moon this year, and most of the fish that have come to the boat have had one thing in common this year, and it is the rise and fall of the moon

    Way to go Bob,

I was thinking the same thing yesterday. Last day of 80 degrees, multiple fronts pushing through – sounds like stickin a ski weather. Glad you could capitalize on it.

Very cool Bob! Nice work sticking with the figure 8’s. Knowing myself I probably would have given up afer 5 or 6 figure 8’s…lesson to be learned from that

Way to go Bob! I too was aware of the moonrise time yesterday but circumstances prevailed and I wasn’t able to fish that window. What I did notice was a bit of “rediscovery” during the “moon down” window. It was also during a time that the skies began to cloud over so I chalked it up as a weather event.

Anyway, congrats on the catch! It’s a beaut!!!

I had friends that got to fish before our last set of storms on Monday. Rise was at 5:55 and storms were coming in and forced me off the water about 7 after only getting to the water about 6 p.m.

Two of my friends that got to fish the rise period had them going nuts. One got a 40 and 44 on the only two suckers he took with, nothing on the baits he was throwing. The other was prefishing the WMT championship. Between 4:30 and 5:30 he had four fish up or on. A pair of low 30’s, a 40, 46 and lost a toad. Hopefully he didn’t waste his fish for this weekend…

Another thing that seems to be key in this period is a south wind. We night fish September and have one of our best months along and over weed twix 6-10 feet with bucktails and floating cranks. Monday night after my first pass, I went back and were there ever the bait fish pods that had shown up in the 20 foot range. Hoping to get back out tonight.

I managed to get my second fifty…no, I think the fish was short of 50, but over 25#. Though I can’t say for sure as the fish was trying to do the belly up in the net and I just wanted to get her back in the water. Of course she went at that time, no pic, no measurements, only know a couple of things: Pretty sure over 45″ & 25# without much doubt… and I couldn’t close my hand around the base of the tail. I am comparing to some mounts in the area, but haven’t found one with the thickness in that base area to feel comfortable comparing yet.

So, how big is a fish that you can’t hold you hand around the base of its tail??? So far I have heard 48″-52″ and 28#-32#. I just feel good that the fish is alive!!!

Congrats all around fellas! I also was out that night…Looked to be guaranteed slime the net weather. Unfortunately or maybe fortunately depending on how you look at it we did slime the net with a monster around 28-30 inches. HOOOO HAW!

Here is a pike that came last night right in front of the storms. We moved a lot of fish in a 1 hour window prior to getting chased off the lake by strong lightning. This hit the tape at 39″. I came so close to getting another one on the “8” again last night, but in the end, it’s just a memory
