I know this is nothing new, for guys to catch nice fish in the (40-50″) class on shad raps and other small walleye style cranks I heard of this phenomenon about 2 years ago, and I’m hearing more and more about is happening on quite afew metro waters. I was wondering if there is a pattern to be had here. I know that muskies perfer the smaller baits in the spring, but do they perfer them in the summer when its blazing hot out. We don’t usually put the feedbag on hot and heavy when it’s nasty out, so are muskies the same way

I spent a few days on metro lakes last august and caught 2 muskies in the mid 40’s and one in the mid 30’s. I was fishing for bass in 8 feet or less throwing a 1/4 oz. swim jig. I seemed to be having better luck than the guys tossing fluffy at the big girls…who knows, I had never caught one before last summer.

We caught a 45 & a 47 on hj12 trolling for walleyes last fall on the pond. This is usually the season when big baits prevail. My thoughts are that a feeding window is a feeding window. Sure big fish prefer big baits but they also eat anything that is readily available. My fear of small baits is that I dont feel comfortable with the hardware and its ability to land the big girl I am after. The infisherman had article on husky jerkin’ muskies. Doug Stange really talked them up as his bait of choice.

Checkout some of the tournament winners and what they used to win. You may be suprised at the “go to” presentation. It is not always a “bulldawg” off the break.

I am one of the guys being refered to and I currently just chalk mine up to dumb luck. The past 2 I have landed have ben my 1st two ever. Although I think you may be onto something with the smaller bait on extremley hot days. plus I think getting out the day that a cold front was moving in made them a little less picky about what they ate before they shut down for a day or two.

    Now as for MN

I’d also consider a name change to: “Trusty but Rusty”
