I’m pretty new to muskie fishing but I’m hooked already. I picked up a Rumbler topwater lure. What’s worked the best for anyone, steady buzzbait style retrieve or a jerk-pause retrieve?

Personally I don’t like ’em, although mine could be a dud. The one I have likes to sink. You pretty much have to cast it, let it sit for a second till it surfaces, and then reel it in. It also tends to dive during the retrieve if there are any waves whatsoever. In my humble opinion there are many similar lures that work much more effectively.

I like the top raider for top water prop bait.

I haven’t fished the Rumbler yet, but having heard a lot of good things I’m going to pick one up this season.

Prop baits aren’t generally made for stop-and-go retrieves, though I’ve seen stranger things work. I use a steady retrieve with an occasional “pop,” which can be especially good when a fish is following.
