Going to Manitoba in early June. Fishing Reed Lake with my brother, he’s been there a few times. Husky jerks are his lure of choice. Just looking for other suggestions for early season fish.

    14″ walleye on a bobber

Seriously though not familiar with the lake, but I am trying to find some sandy bays with some weed growth that time of year, even better if wind is blowing in and use the brightest flashiest lures I got. They don’t seem picky. Top water prop bait or a larger spinner bait is easier to manage with the weeds. I’m use to dark stained waters where we go in Ontario, so adjust accordingly.

Got me excited for our trip this year. I was so anxious last year no sooner had we all our gear packed up in the boats, I tied on my new $25 bucktail spinner with $5 flouro leader just wanting to get er wet very first cast backlash, and there I stand watching my $30 rig sail through the air never to be seen again. Never spent that much on 1 stupid lure before and for sure as heck ain’t gonna again.

Yep, Big Hammer Swimbaits or similar and Husky Jerks are my faves. Also, a 6″ Phantom Softail is really deadly on Pike and most fish have not seen one.

Brovarvey Swim Jig in perch color with 5 or 6 inch grub trailer. Caution: May also catch monster bass. Not targeting pike I caught a 41 incher on pool 9 on a similar rig. She was a pig. She got pickled. Deep hooked,, she absolutely ate the jig. Pike were a menace that evening.

I forgot to say, don’t forget this rig when fishing in the summer too! I’ve caught my biggest pike fishing this rig over weed beds in mid July. They rocket out of the weeds to kill it.

3/4 oz gold johnson sliver minnow with a white splittail trailer. I’m thinking of modifing a piece of the new Uncle Josh MEAT to use as a trailer. Also thinking the Sebile Magic swimmer soft in the Ghostescent color might be deadly.Swim-stop-hold-on.

Been chucking lures for bigpike on Nipigon Ontario for 15 years, biggest one – 21.5# came on a red and white daredevil. Biggest fish I seen caught on the lake – 28# – caught on red and white daredevil. The real question is: Why don’t I use a red and white daredevil more often????

The pike will generally in shallow where it’s a bit warmer. Your likely fishing for post spawn pike that sometimes are a little worn out from the spawning process and may not give it that that violent strike typical of pike. Sometimes in ice out conditions I’ve had them just give it a little thud – tap so be prepared for a quick hook set. I tend to go small in ice out conditions. One reason is that I use X-Raps and the smaller ones run shallower and at this time of year the size doesn’t seem to matter. That’s not true in late spring –fall. A number 10 X-Rap or occasionally a husky Jerk is all I use for ice out pike and I generally do pretty well. Remember the pause.

I can relate. some of the bigger X-rap family of lures run close to $20, makes you really hate underwater stumps and logs
