Final open water days on White Bear…

Holy smokes was it brisk out there on the water today! I shared the boat with Ryan McMahon out on White Bear looking for one of those “last shots” at an open water muskie. I really don’t have much to report other than that my body is now officially ready for winter’s worst. Did I mention it was COLD?!

The muskies decided to lay low most of the day…. we fished sunup to sundown for two bites. We missed one. We stuck the other that was in the 43″ – 44″ range. Not a bad fish for a guy that fished muskies one time all summer. As a good friend of mine is known to say… it was better than a sharp stick in the eye.

As for presentation – we dragged big suckers under floats along deep weedlines. OF course we only had two bites all day so maybe this info should be considered as what NOT to do.

The bite was tough but if I had to do it all over again I wouldn’t have traded a minute of it for anything. Let’s just say my sense of humor meshes with Ryan’s and we’ll leave it at that.

For those waiting for ice… we had skim ice forming in sheets in the boat harbor at sundown. It won’t be long!

I was walking the dog by the White Bear landing today and saw one boat; thought only a fool would….. didn’t finish the sentence. Fishing one these kind of days is challenging but isn’t it great to be fishing on these kinda days.

I saw one just like that on Bald Eagle yesterday. Followed my clackin rap right next to the boat. Beautiful creatures.

That would have been us. We definitely didn’t have any competition for spots that’s for sure.

Every time I’m lucky enough to boat a muskie I always kick myself for not fishing for them more. There’s just too many destinations, bites and fun species to do it all and the muskies seem to fall through the cracks for me… which is definitely something I need to change. I agree, they’re amazing.

Brrrr! Another cold one today… Almost a repeat of yesterday, I lose or miss a fish and James comes in to salvage an otherwise miserable day! This guy knows how to bring the hurt to muskies!!

I do have to say, despite the less than desirable weather conditions, I had a great time fishing with James and Ben the past couple of days. Truely one of the best times I’ve ever had in a boat. Great experience!… Woulda been perfect,.. if only I had a nose warmer.
