Is it worth fishing for muskies in the fall when it gets dark out and water temps are 55 and below, troll or cast or just not head out.

Dragging suckers or casting big rubber and big gliders are top producers for late fall muskies.

Muskies can and will be caught until lakes are covered with ice.

I will be out their antill ice up, but is it worth heading out at seven pm till when ever you decide to quit. I just haven’t tried nights in the late fall yet.

    Sorry, missed that part.

Depends on what you call night fishing I guess…

Last year, the biggest fish I saw caught all season came on my last day, well after sunset. Granted it was before 10:00 PM but it had already been pitch dark out for awhile.

Personally I have a tough time staying out super late when it gets cold in the fall, but I have no reason to believe the big girls wouldn’t eat all night long. I do think your most consistent window in the late fall is going to be 1 hour +/- of civil twilight.

I would say it depends on the waters you are fishing and what forage these muskies are targeting!! Also I would try and use the your major/minors windows to focus on when trying just to put more cards in your hand

I have always got off the lake just after sundown in the fall do to the cold. I just needed some extra confidence to stick it out and see what happens. The lake I fish has a great trolling bite all through the night till sunrise in the summer. I will have to try it this fall season and fish at night,if I do I will post my results. Thanks for the reply guys.

If you are fishing any of the cisco based lakes… you are missing the boat if you are not fishing after dark, as the ciscoes and whitefish come shallow to spawn and are followed by the predator fish… Of course you are competing with lots of the real deal, but you are in the presence of the the target species also!!!

Sorry so late….. it’ll have to go into next year’s planning but I can tell you that fishing for muskies after dark is always a possibility. I do think there’s prime windows, like dawn and dusk, but it seems to me that when the moon is right, they can bite anytime of the night! If you take the week of a full moon and factor in the previous 3 nights, as well as the post 3 nights, moon rise can be another prime bite zone. I have yet to experience any significance from a moonset. But I would encourage you to try the darkness in the fall as much as you do any other time of year. As things cool, you may have to slow your presentations some or change target depth but if you have a water that “bites at night”, hit it ’til she’s hard!
