I’m setting up a lead core reel to do some deep water Pike trolling. How do you like the floro leaders that are around? Are they worth changing to or should I stick with a traditional leader?

Love fluoro leaders. The longer the leader the better the action and less visible. Usually for trolling we try 3′-5′ leaders. I’d go around 170lb fluoro or higher.

If you’re having the reel spooled somewhere like I think you mentioned I would just take it to Thorne Bros and they could set you up so you walk out the door “water ready”

What ever you do, do NOT use a Thorne Bros. leader or any fluoro leader that isn’t tied and crimped. I’ve seen them break on a number of occasions. I am constantly making my clients remove their leaders because they are only crimped… With that said, I use fluoro leaders a lot. Bucktails, Dawgs, and trolling… Although lately I’ve been trolling alot with a solid wire leader… Sometimes I think it gives off a better vibration. Every leader I use is made by Stealth Tackle. They have a leader for every applicaton and I’ve seen hundreds and hundreds of muskies boated without a single failure on a Stealth Leader.

Ryan, I used to fish muskies almost daily in the 80’s and early 90’s until health problems stopped it. Is Thorne Bros not what they used to be? or just certain things they sell. Want to get back into it “part time” Just curious…
    Thanks, Scott

Scott, Thorne bros is the best Muskie shop in Minnesota hands down end of discussion! But the fluro leaders they sell are absolutely garbage do NOT buy they’re in house made leaders!!!! Take Ryan’s advice and buy Stealth leaders they’re the best on the market! For all of your other Muskie needs Thorne is a one stop shop!

Tim, thanks! that’s what I thought. I always made my own leaders to save some money. Great sport, anxious to get back into it!

It’s one thing people think they can get away with skimping on. I’ve heard too many times, aaa I think 80# should be fine. Snap. Wrong. 130+

Scott, Tim and Ben covered it pretty well there… and Yes, Thorne Bros. is still the place to go for all your musky needs. They have it all… except for reliable leaders I guess…

    YUP, Can’t say I disagree

I may have to restock my leader selection though
