I will be in the Presque Isle area in June. I am looking at CPR musky fishing on Crab Lake this year. Has anyone fished Crab Lake?

    ranger:

A great lake with lots of great structure. One you will want to keep the motor to an idle the first few times you fish it as it has many rock structures that appear our of now where to eat lower units… Beautiful clear water, wood, rock and some weeds with lots of varying depths from one end to the other.

Crab Lake is in my opinion, one of the most beautiful bodies of water in Wisconsin – It feels like you are in Canada. Like the previous poster stated, there are a lot of reefs that can jack up your boat so caution is advised. If memory serves the landing was poor, hopefully that has changed, but the lake is worth the effort. My advise would be to:
    1. Not sure what weed situation is there anymore, but fish any cabbage or other green weeds you can find -there was a nice patch at the mouth of the little bay where the creek goes up to North Crab Lake.
    2. All of the deep rock structure can make crank baits a good choice to fish but on June 1 it depends on weather and how warm it is. You may be able to sight fish muskies in shallow water warming up in the sun. Grandma type twitch baits, bass jigs, walleye and bass size plastics fished with spinning gear can be extremely productive in that situation.
    3. Lots of wood to fish when I was there too. Water is stained but clear so stealth is important.
    4. There are lots of islands and shallow reefs – if you get a strong prevailing wind from whatever direction, this can create current areas in the narrows or necked down spots between them and make fish move up to take advantage of it.
    5. All of the structure looks good and trying to figure out where to start can be overwhelming (hint: green weeds). Consider hiring a guide for a 1/2 day or a full day at the beginning of the trip.
    Good luck
