Bobber Fishing

My parents have a cabin in Wisconsin on a shallow bay 3-5 feet deep. I know in the spring there are a lot of pike in it. Smaller ones stick around through out the summer. I was thinking about days when I didn’t want to take the boat out or just be able to sit on shore setting up some sort of bobber rig. I was thinking of just using heavy fluorocarbon that way I might even find the occasional walleye. What are your recommendations. Would you use a large octopus hook or treble.

    Thanks in advance

Your line ideas should work ok for what you are thinking. I’d suggest using a circle hook so small fish don’t get hurt in hooking and can be released.

I would use a quick strike rig which usually has two treble and a dead minnow or best would just be sucker meat. Big notherns most of the time do not want to chase bait and are cruising looking for an easy meal. Have caught the majority of + 40″ notherns this way.

I thought I read that Wisco changed they’re regs to outlawing single hook sucker rigs? Maybe check up on that. A small quick strike rig would be great under a float though.

I agree with Tim regarding the quick strike rule recently enacted in WI to protect muskies. I tried to locate the ruling, but was unable to come up with it and post a link to it.

It seems like bait have to be over 8″ and at that time need to have a quick strike rig on them or an offset circle hook. If I have time later, I will try to come up with it…

You very likely could use smaller baits with quick strikes, though.

What do you mean by an “offset” circle hook?

offset means not in the same plane through the entire hook from eye through the shaft to the barb.

That’s what I thought, but wasn’t sure. Thanks for the clarification.
