Alright lets hear em! What are some tactics that you are really going to try and target this up coming musky season?

Personally, its going to be deeper water tactics with rubber such as dawgs, medussas, and tubes! I own a few of these baits but never had the equipment to throw them. I will be buying a nice set up for this purpose in the next few weeks. Muskies, beware!

    Let’s hear yours!

I have caught lots of muskies on bulldawgs, helidogs and red october tubes. Almost all of which have came from fifteen feet or less many times five or less. seems almost always a reaction strike.Fish seem to hit within in first five cranks of reel. Precision casting definatly will be on the list this year. Find out where they haunt and cast to them when the time is right. Good luck this season!

^ I agree 100% on that. I also want to REALLY get to know my lakes and spots. I’m going to do a lot of scouting out specific plant species, height of plants, and density of plants.

I’m with you on going deeper. Trolling Spoonplugs on Pewaukee, Mendota, and Menona.

I’m going to try to find some more water that doesn’t get pounded every weekend. I’ll fish windows and stay away from the crowds. I might try trolling a few Trollgirls too.

I just let my partner do the work bringing the fish to the boat with a phantom jerk bait and I finish em off with a figure 8 with a big dawg.
Not really a tactic but it works for me lol.

He was far from a big one but well noted. I’m guessing maybe 24″ at best. Caught him fairly early in the mornin on a 1 oz. rattle trap silver and black. In that it was about 45 feet from the boat, an enjoyable first fish to get. 6 follows, 2 bumps and 1 catch. Once again found myself casting all day. Sore back and arms. Gotta get this trolling thing going this year: )

I really want to master the phantom glide bait

I also want to mention that as you may know, there are a few people on this board who’ve been blazing the trail with the mega sized pounder plastics for quite a few years now

Last year I joined your ranks, and I love it

It’s a totally addictive way to catch Muskies

Right on Joe, big plastics put a ton of fish in the boat. Very effective way to fish from opener till the last day of the season.

One of my goals this year, is to protect myself better from the sun…

One tactic I am really excited about honing in on early is a good open water basin trolling bite. Some years I can get onto them right away in deeper water, other years it seems I have to grind them out in the greenery.

I can’t say no to a June night hunting trip, one of my favorites. Seems to always be good to me.

Hey Ben, welcome! Its usually about March when I start to dream about open water June bites… They can be a blast, but like you mentioned sometimes they’re in the salad and sometimes they’re out roaming… It all depends on the weather we have in the next couple of months. That’s why I love this little game they call musky fishing…

I wonder if there’s an open water bite on lake “X”

I’ve never done the open water thing

We may be trying that a bit… There are some deep cribs that the fish may be hanging above.

What exactly do you mean by cribs?

It’s something that baby muskies sleep in

    No, seriously I couldn’t resist.

A crib is a man made aquatic structure. It’s basically a fresh water reef. It attracts small fish which attracts predators

JOe’s got it right. Sometimes they can just be brush piles or Christmas trees that people drop down. The better man-made ones are made of thicker logs and sometimes are held together with re-bar.

They are dropped into lakes that are often void of structure and will hold crappies a lot in the warmer months. They aren’t my favorite structure for muskies.

In June I’ll fish high in the water (most times) when fishing open water. I won’t be getting down to the cribs with my baits. I’ll just sort of use them as a starting point and a point of reference (which is nice when fishing an open basin)

I always assumed they were some type of man made structure, just didn’t know for sure! Thanks. Pretty sure I’ve gotten hung up on one in bald eagle…Was trolling when my drag started screaming. Two of us ripped up our hands trying to pull it off but no luck….If you find a 10″ grandma let me know

is it legal to drop random xmas trees and things to that sort in the lake? I have always thought about doing it but didnt know if I would get in trouble.

In Minnesota it is illegal but I’m pretty sure they’re talking about Wisconsin.

I know I needed to apply for a permit to build cribs to put in front of my cabin in WI. They have regualations for the materials you use and you have to indicate where you put them. We built them out of oak pallets banded together. We removed every other surface board from them and strapped several 12 inch concrete blocks on them to hold them down.

I believe it’s illegal in Sconnie too, but that’s never stopped people from dropping random christmas trees down ice holes
