on a whim

    Hi everyone,

I was doing chores around the house today and needed to refill a few gas cans. Seeing as how I have to cross the river to get to the gas station, I threw my fishing rod into the truck as well. Stopped by the river on my way home and tied on a “Thin Fin” crank bait for a few casts. First spot just below the dam yielded nothing so I moved about a block downstream.

Half a dozen casts later I caught and released a small Northern. Six casts later, a larger fish hit my crank bait. I reeled the fish in towards shore when it suddenly made a strong run, leaving a wake as it went. Oh, another Northern, only this one was much larger.

She made another strong run and I began to wonder if I’d lose her. In and out my line went as she jumped and pulled against the drag. The battle lasted a few minutes before I managed to get her to shore. Grabbed her behind the head with my free hand and the rest is history.

She weighed in at 8lbs. 2 ounces which is a good fish for my area. Measured 36 inches on the fish board.

I guess it paid off to follow my whim and stop for a few casts.
