Minnesota Cousins Snag 50-Inch Muskie Off a Dock
Two cousins will have a great fish story to share at school on Monday, and it is definitely not about the one that got away.
Warning, reading on may cause frustration and jealousy for serious anglers.
11 year-old Joe Hammer from Lakeville and his 9 year-old cousin Katelyn Hammer from Sartell were fishing for sunnies off the dock on Lake Shamineau near Motley this weekend when Katelyn caught a small sunfish.
Not so sure about taking it off the hook herself, she had it dangling in the water when a giant muskie jumped out of the water, ate the sunfish and got hooked on the line.
Now less worried about getting it off the hook, and more concerned about just getting it out of the water, Katelyn quickly handed the rod to her cousin Joe who wrestled the muskie in for her. The pair managed to get the muskie into a boat which was tied to the dock to contain it until their parents could help further.
What makes their story even more amazing is Katelyn was fishing with a broken rod her dad had glued back together for her to use this weekend.
Joe’s dad, Jeff Hammer says he measured the giant muskie at 50-inches. That is just six inches shorter than the largest muskie caught in the state according to the DNR.
The fish was released back into the water after a few quick photos.
