    Hey Guys,
I’m a bassfisherman that is getting into northern pike fishing. I’m looking to purchase a nice trolling and casting rod. I want to use it for both trolling and casting heavy cranks and dardevils. For a reel, I have a Pflueger Supreme xt, and 12 pound mono. Not interested in going to braided line. What rod lenghth and action would you recommend? I’m new to trolling too, so would like some advice. Medium or medium heavy action? Thanks for your help.

From what I gather you are more interested in haveing a duel purpose rod rather than one of each correct? I would go with a 7 or 7 1/2 foot med heavy but if used mostly for pike I would go with a heavy action. I realize you are not interested in braid but you should give it consideration as both a casting and trolling line. It gives better hookups tears through weeds better and is overal stronger for its diamater. If you are worried about the fish seeing the line then a florocarbon leader is easily added for both pike and trolling.

    thats my $.02

i just bought a cheapy casting rod to kind of break myself into the world of baitcasters (got a revo s on clearance at gander for dirt cheap, couldnt resist)

i got a 7 foot berkley lightning rod shock in medium heavy, and i love it (i fell for the “engineered for superlines” marketing gimmic) but i LOVE it. its a split grip and when im reeling in with the fighting butt anchored in my elbow area (doesnt quite reach all the way to my elbow) i can feel
every crankbaits action all the wat up through my shoulder its amazing, never really had that in a rod at that price before. i only wish they came in longer lengths, with a 7’10” or 8 foot rod, you could cast those cranks a couple miles
