You guys ever troll deep water 20-30′ with 3 way rigs? I’ve done it a lot for walleye, but never for pike. I can’t help but think that in mid summer when pike are sitting in deep water adjacent to humps/reefs that this would work. Any input & how much a lead do you put on?

    Justin –

We’ve had success on Beatty & Pasha using that exact set up. We aren’t targeting them… we are targeting lakers, but have caught some dandy’s.

I would say it’s not a numbers game, but the ones you do catch tend to make it worth it.

just what chad said! many times on a lake in Canada where we fish a lot of trout in the mid summer months!! We will troll with dipsy divers running our baits down in the 30 to 40 foot rage over even deeper water.. and have got some giant pike..

I would say that it is definitely worth the effort,, the ones you get are always bruisers!!!

I tried it once, and did good. Didnt catch any monsters, but lots of eaters. We trolled with a 1oz dropper and a #13 original floater on a 5′ leader in about 10′ of water. I would suspect you would need at least 3oz to get down to 20-30 feet. You want to troll em fast, we pulled at 1.8-2.4.

Get a few pike doing that here on Mendota once in while. They hug the thermocline.

That’s where I learned to do it at. I use 1 to 2 oz sinkers and a quick strike rig. Pretty much every deep basin lake I fish summer pike in produces, including Door County summer pike.
