I am in the market for a new small/medium bucktail rod that i will be pairing with a Shimano Curado 301. Most of the time i will be tossing double 8’s or smaller single blades/safety pin style.

I was thinking something in the 7’2″ – 8ft. range would be appropriate as i am in favor of the longer rods these days.

Price range i was thinking somewhere under $175 unless there is any must buys or deals that anybody knows of….I am always a sucker for a good deal.

Last but not least i am always looking for a good warranty for my money. If the product has a lifetime warranty i am almost always willing to pay for the quality and service.

Thanks for any advice and i hope to get responses before tomorrow night. Then it’s off to the musky expo…YEA BUDDY.

My old Avid bucktail rod is now the LTMU73MHF / TMU73MHF / DOWNSIZER
Specifically designed for smaller size musky baits including lighter bucktails, twitch baits, crankbaits and jigs…. Looks like something that fits your needs

I am trying to move away from the tackle industries rods and in the direction of st. croix, shimano, or g loomis

Check out Elk River Custom Rods made in Phillips, Wisconsin. A small shop that features several types of custom musky rods near that price range. Warranty is comparable to St. Croix. I used to have Quantum 7 footers in the Med-Heavy range. Handled midsized bucktails real well. Good for a couple of years, and then broke their tips off about 7 inches down. “Likely the length they should have been in the first place”. Switched to a St. Croix, but now it sits in the boat as the #2 rod now that I have the Elk River rod.

I have been using a 8′ Shimano Compre heavy action for a few years and like it a lot, but I also use that rod a lot for topwater too. Paired with that Curado you can’t go wrong with a MH or H action for small bucktails. I wouldn’t go shorter than 8′ expecially with figure 8ing bucktails on every cast. Every inch makes it that much easier.

Why not the Shimano Compre 8′ XH. Great rod, and it’s only $160.

don’t think the xh would work so good with 1 and 1/2oz bucktails. but the shimano compre is on my radar for tomorrow at the show…

I have a St Croix Top N Tail which has been great for topwaters, and bucktails. I do not use for throwing the 10’s but could in a pinch.

I’ve thrown plenty of smaller stuff with mine, and it works great. I throw alot of Lungen DC-8’s and have never had a problem.

bite the bullet and talk to Lonnie at Thorne. Will cost more up front but you wont be dissapointed. Plus theres always something about picking your own grips and flare.
