basic pike question

I have never caught any member of the genus Esox. There is a small (52 acres) lake near me that has been stocked with northern pike and I would like to catch one, rather than focusing on the 6″ sunfish and 10″ stocker trout that I normally catch there. How should I go about it?

    Open water or ice covered?

If open water just grab a shiny lure and cast.

A 1/2 ounce spinner bait: silver bladed with a white skirt will work great

What he said, but a black spinnerbait with orange blade.

Get a #12 Rapala Husky Jerk in Rainbow trout color…
Planting pike in a trout lake is like suicide…They will eradicate those stockers FAST!

Be some nice healthy water wolves until the salmonids run out. Weird that pike and trout would be managed together in a pond

I’m not sure why anybody thought that was a good idea… It’s Bark Camp Lake in Virginia, if anybody wants to Google it. There’s not a *huge* population of waterwolves there, but some big ones do show up occasionally. A friend of a friend caught a 37″ specimen in ’10.

My favorite thing about said lake is that most of the stocked trout are brookies, so that crazy Mexican I fish with gets to really show off his mettle as a chef when we get back from there.

Weedless Silver Minnow spoon, with a piece of Uncle Josh Pork Strip as a trailer, fished in and along the weed edges.
If that won’t do it, a simple black/silver 5-6″ floating Rapala should.
