I was in the mans mall today at lunch and I saw they had two 7’2″ rapala rods on clearance. My question is would it be big enough if I ever wanted to start muskie fishing. I have never tried and would like to start this summer. I think the line specs were 20-40 lbs and lure weight was 3/4 oz to 3 oz. They were marked down to $60.00. Anyone ever fished with one? Thanks

I have not personnally used that rod but given the rod specs you listed – it would absolutely work for standard musky baits such as bucktails & crankbaits.

A 7′ rod will work but you would be much happier with a 8-9′ if you will be fishing all day. May be a little akward at first but your body will thank you.

don’t have a musky rod, but i have a 7ft rod set up for long lining cranks, and it has been a good rod for the price.

Thanks guys, I think for the price ill pick one up and pass the savings onto a nice reel for it.

It might work great for a fish that actually fights!

I have two of the 7’2″ Rapala “muskie rods”. They are great for northerns but not enough backbone to throw most medium to large muskie baits.

I have one of them and it’s my go-to rod for small to medium sized topwaters. It’s far from the best choice if you’re throwing double 10s or big rubber, but for Jackpots, Weagles or Top Raiders, it’s a decent rod for a great price.

Thanks for the response. What kind of reel and line do you run on it?

On that one I run a Calcutta 400TE, but I think I’m going to move that reel to my 8’6″ St Croix this year and put an Abu on the Rapala rod. The Shimano has a less line pick up than the Abu’s do, but it’s much smoother when you’re pulling big blades or big rubber. I’d gladly sacrifice a little speed if it means not having my arms fall off.

I run 80 lb Sufix 832 on all of my set ups.
