So we did it, we went out and trolled for nothing but Skis for 12 hours on Sunday. Results? 2 walleyes, a 27″ that ate a Firetiger Triple D, and a 24″ that at a Black and Chrome Ernie. I could only wrangle the support of one hearty soul, “tomr” from here on the site.
It’s always fun fishing with new folks, and Tom was no exception. Despite the minimal activity on the lines, and the “surface of the sun” heat, Tom kept us in good spirits with some great tales of hunting and fishing trips past; exploits both on and off the field\water. If you ever get a chance to share some time in the boat with Tom be sure to ask about his adventures around Thief Lake… My stomach hurts today from laughing.
We fished primarily on and around the flats; 7 Mile, 8 Mile, 9 Mile, Center Bar, Needle, Greg’s, Fisher, Boot, Sliver, and Midget\Saddle. Baits stayed in the water as we went from flat to flat, hoping we would stumble across roaming schools of silver sandwiches. Unfortunately we never marked anything that could be considered noteworthy as far as baitfish, and not one arc more than 2 feet off the bottom.
Perhaps it was the high skies and flat water, or the water temp shift of 71 in the morning to 83 by 6:00 in the evening, but the fish just didn’t cooperate.
This won’t be the last time I try to do this for the year, however I do plan on picking a day with more angler friendly weather next time.
Stay tuned, I will post the open seats invite again in this forum soon.
