That I can get into the mouth of a flathead with and cut the hook without jerking the fish around and that’s less than $70.

Certainly you Muski guy cut your hooks out…what are you using?

Mr. Stevens pointed a nice one out to me last year, but $70 is pretty hard to swallow…so to speak.

You should be able to find a knipx bolt cutter for around 50$ anything else won’t cut a 10/0.

    Knipex. Model 7112200.

$70 bucks is better than having to go to the emergency room to get a hook out of your hand.

    Brian,
I bought my knipex off ebay. There are a boat load of them.

    Knipex bolt cutters

I’ve used non-knipex bolt cutters and had them blow up at inconvenient times.

no cutter is even close to knipex! if you don’t have knipex and your fishing musky u have bad ethics or a short pocketbook! i actually felt bad not having good cutters in the boat back in the day. now i can breathe easy!

Well after seaching for 3 years, checking out all the options and spending a few bucks on cutters that wouldn’t cut a 10/0, I ordered the Knipex last night.

Thanks Timschmitz! Bringing yours down to Everts for me to try out sold me.

Us muskie guys aren’t all bad, huh? Not like those bass guys, anyway.

90% of my time on open water is spent fishing muskies. That makes me a ski guy. Catching them is an entirely different story, however. Most times I put the boat in the water, it’s just casting practice.

By the way, Good musky hunters don’t cut the hook, they bend the barbs down so they don’t have to..

Like you I went kicking and screaming to the store and bought the Knipex ones, it should last forever though..or till I drop it overboard.

Hah! Got that covered. Duct tape and a tether connected to my belt loop!

Covered off on that with the ski guys this morning.

PS sorry about your loss Al.

Well, it looks like almost everybody agrees on the knipex… Which is what I use too. I think it was Brian that brought up protecting this investment in the boat…

I made a wrist lanyard (sp?) for my knipex. It’s sort of hard to attach anything to the handle so what I did was take some curtain cord/rope and fastened it to the handle with the thread I had in my bobbin for tying bucktails. I executed this pretty much the same way I tie bucktails, start out with a couple dabs of super clue to secure the rope to the handle, then wrap the thread around the rope and handle. Every 20 (or so) wraps I will also apply head cement to the thread. At the end I finished it with a nice coat of head cement and this has lasted a good 5 or 6 years now… Just a thought to keep that little investment from finding the bottom of the lake…

If anybody is interested I can post pictures next week, as I will be reunited with my boat this weekend!

    That’s a good idea

I’ve been wondering how I’d secure a wrist strap, just short of drilling a small hole in the handle, but I wasn’t super excited about doing that

Haven’t lost it yet, but over the years I/people in my boat have lost more than I care to think of, and just figured it was a matter of time.

I like the lanyard idea, another project before open water.

That there now makes sense!!! I know that guys that have the boga grips use large floats to keep them on the water’s surface, but it seems that the lanyard would still have to be created for the Knipex. I think we used shrink wrap on a set of cutters that I bought before my Knipex. They were decent and still serve as backups, but still am very happy to have the Knipex!!!

If you don’t want it around your wrist, you could always attach it to a chuck of foam “noodle” as a float.

Which doubles as a urinal in my boat.
