I just purchased a Daiwa Saltist 30 from Thorne Bros and was unpleasantly surprised to fine a manual clutch on the reel. Does anyone have this reel and have a problem with the clutch while casting. I’ve never had a reel like this before…I may send it back and exchange for something else…bummer

if u send it back get a 20! smaller as shaley said but still burns baits. i have a friend who literally only has 1 hand and he fishes with saltist 20 and cranks much faster than i can with a regular reel ever. he has no problem switching the lever either so i would imagine u could get used to it. so my advice is unless ur 7ft tall and have huge hands get a 20 and crank away. great reel for the money! hope this helps a bit…pm with any more questions

I run the saltist 20 levelwind its great for running BIG blades. And any thing u want to burn all day and not get tired. no problems with manual clutch. except after using all day i find myself trying to engage my other reels that are auto when i switch.

I run the shimano trinidads and the lever is no issue, takes a few minutes to get used to. I actually like the lever better now because it makes clicking in and out of free spool while fighting a fish easier.

THanks a lot!!! I think I’ll stick with Saltist and may look at the 20 instead.

I had that reel, and I hated it. I’d suggest either getting a trinidad or a 700te.

I have a 20 and I really like it. I have had it for 2 summers and it is a great reel to burn 10’s with.. Also good for just about anything else.. Thrown rubber and cranks with it as well.

I have a 20 and a 30 on Okuma EVX 9’3″ rods and I swear by them, the only thing like mentioned here was getting used to the flip release, but use it a few times and you get used to it right away!
