yesterday i was doing a bunch of work with rods and hooks getting ready for the season and i broke the tip of 1 of my musky rods. what i’m wondering is i only broke about a half inch off the tip and sanded it flat…if i put a new tip on will the lure swim right?? it’s a 9ft. rod for big swim baits… thanks for any advice guys or else i’ll just have to go do it the old fashion way and try it.

The rod should perform fine with a new tip since you only broke a half inch off.

    Take Care and tight lines!!

I have broken up to six inches off tips on poles and just replaced the tip and never noticed much difference. I don’t think you will notice any change in the rod with only and inch missing.

I wouldn’t sand anywhere near the tip on a rod. The vibration may weaken the bonds between fibers. I would just use hot melt glue with the correct size tiptop.

Don’t want to hi-jack your post here, but how do you figure out what size tip guide to buy?
I saw some templates on line with the different size holes cut in it, but I don’t know how else you would do it.

Does just glueing them on work fine, or do you have to wrap them?

The tips come measured in 64ths of an inch. Use any tool that measures in 64ths. A friend made me a guide by drilling holes from 4/64 to 1/2 inch in a thin block of wood. He labeled the holes with the number of 64ths, i.e. 5, 5 1/2 (11/128), 6 and so on.

Tip tops are measured by 1/64 of an inch. So a size 6 would be .090 thousands of an inch. Measure the tip of the the rod and get one accordingly. If you are just going to put the tip top on by itself, and not wrap it with thread and finish, I would epoxy the tip on because hot melt glue can come loose if the temp in your car or truck gets hot enough in the summer.

What kind of epoxy? Like the same kind you use on rod wraps?

    thanks
