Eskimo Mako Auger Not Cutting

    Hey guys,

I recently bought an Eskimo Mako Ice Auger from a guy and have been having problems with how it cuts. This was the model from a few years ago that has shaver blades, but doesn’t have that blade protector circle around the bottom.

The power head on this thing runs great and is easy to start even in very cold weather, but the blade just doesn’t seem to want to bite. The blades themselves are sharp, not beat up, and appear to be on the auger the correct way, but regardless, they take FOREVER to drill a hole.

The auger was a little loose from the head which I have since tightened(but haven’t tested) and the blades have a weird bend on the outside trailing edge of them.(see picture) I’m not sure if that bend is supposed to be there or not, but I’m just not sure why it’s having so much trouble since the whole thing appears to be in great shape and hardly used.

    Any thoughts?

    Thanks!

I would think you could go purchase a new set of eskimo quantum blades for whatever size auger it is for somewhere around $30. I know Fleet Farm sells just the replacement blades if they are still in stock… good luck!

You know what is weird? That almost looks like it’s a hand auger, that was put on a powerhead. The blades on power Eskimo augers never looked like that. The pre-Quantum augers definitely did not look like that. Did he install the wrong blades?

For all I know, he could have done just that. Thanks Broman for the link! I think I’m going to pull the trigger and grab a new set of blades and see what kind of difference that’ll make.

    I appreciate the feedback!

I had a hand Eskimo auger to start but now I have the Stingray power auger. By the looks of the picture, it sure looks like he put the hand auger blades on the power auger. I think if you switch the blades it should all work fine.

Hope that’s all that is wrong with it and it works out!

I was looking around online for the BB8 blades, but they are apparently out of production and are a little harder to come by these days, especially in store. I did however come across a forum where a guy was stating that he bought the Strike Master 8″ LPD-8PD Lazer Mag blades and they worked perfectly.

Has anyone heard anything about this?

I would just buy a 8″ Strikemaster auger bit and be done with it……
By the time you buy new blades you are already half the cost of a nice used Strike master bit with new blades from D-Rock

I would just buy the chipper blades that are supposed to be on there. I have them on my stingray and they cut very well.

Fleet Farm stocks the 8″ quantum blades, just go buy them and enjoy.

Curious as to why even the hand auger blades wouldn’t cut on the powerhead. I made an adapter to fit my 6″ SM hand auger to my SM powerhead ( shank sizes are different from the 6″ to 8″) for early ice and it cuts like a dream, never had any problems with it. I know different brand and possibly different blades on it but you still think they would cut without the problems that you are experiencing unless the pitch is off….

So it looks like Fishtrekker was on to something here. I went ahead and got new blades and it still cuts like garbage……(sigh). Sooooo, I’m headed up to D-Rock tomorrow morning to talk it over with them and possibly just biting the bullet and getting a new auger.

those Turbo blades usually cut like a hot knife through butter but they do have to be sharp or they wont cut at all. being that you put new blades on and they still wont cut i agree with Fishtrekker maybe the pitch is off. D-rock might be able to just fix ur auger bit instead of buyin a new auger.

D-ROCK said last weekend they had a tournament and they would have used augers and powerheads for sale from the tourney. I would see if you can attach a slightly used strikemaster auger from them for $100 on your powerhead. The lazer blades are great.
