As soon as it started cooling down over here in Western Colorado, it started heating up again. This past weekend, Cheyenne and I wanted to escape the heat and get up high into the mountains.
We fished a lake that is roughly 10.6K feet up, and got there as the sun was rising. It was almost a bit too cold, but luckily we brought sweaters. Low 40’s when we showed up and no wind at all. Felt good to get the fly gear out and land some trout, while Cheyenne was slamming them on the HD Trout from Dynamic Lures! It was really cold and only small gnats and a few mosquitos were out, but A LOT of rises…I tried a wide variety of dry flies to limited success, and after about an hour I switched to a hopper dropper setup. Size 10 Foam grasshopper with a bright orange head (just so I could see it), followed up with a size 18 Rainbow Warrior nymph about 3.5 feet down, and then about 1.5-2 feet below that a size 20 olive green scud. Both nymphs were a big hit! I still get too excited like I’m bass fishing and set the hook too hard, but working on that. Landed a few nice ones and missed 10x more but still had fun with all the action in the float tube…Not to mention was lovely fishing in some cooler weather!!
Hope you all enjoy the action! I also finally casted my fly line into Cheyenne’s fishing pole on accident and got a pretty crazy knot😂😂
