Hoping to head to Erie this winter for some walleye fishing. Here’s the question.
What type rod, rod length, line, etc is recommended? Around here I don’t fish anything heavier than 6 lb.
How far east do most guys go to access the ice?
I’m sure other guys want to know this info and there is not a better place than IDO to get it.

I go to Erie maybe 2 to 5 times a year, so im sure there are guys that can give more info. For ice, I run all heavier walleye rods that would double as trout rods in the 36-40″ range. I prefer braid with a floro leader.

As far as access, it depends on timing. Walleye are migrating east to west throughout winter. Now, Catawaba is good. As winter progresses, Magee Park is a better option to run out to the reefs.

If your traveling a long distance, keep up on the local reports to out there. Warm spells will get the tributaries flowing muddy water. You want to follow clean water if at all possible.

I’ve booked a 3 day trip for the middle of February, just gonna use the medium action rods with braid and floro, from what I’ve been reading the last couple of days the wind has blown and the access and ice conditions are sketchy

I also heard they got a lot of snow. That makes it tough to see cracks.
