anchor cleats

There was a conversation that started here last spring on this topic I am wondering if anyone has replaced them and what they used. Was it Mike W that also had this same boat and same issue?

I have an Alumacraft Navigator 175 tiller and it has 4 standard anchor tie down cleats – the bad part is that my rods keep slipping under them and I have broken a few . I would love to replace with the recessed ones but at $50 each that hurts. Any suggestions?

The first pic is what I have. The second is a very nice recessed cleat (about $50) and not sure if this would work on my gunnel, the 3rd and 4th pics are ones that I found in a search but have not seen personally – the stainless one is still about $45.

I like the strength and confidence in the cleats I have but I really can’t afford to break more rods or the $200 to try the recessed ones. Maybe in the long run it would be cheaper to drop the $200 but…

    Thanks,

Is there some kind of foam or rubber block/tube/? you can use to slide over them when not in use?

E&D,I have the same cleats on my boat as you do, I have never broke a rod from catching it under the cleat(ouch!) have you ever seriously considered trying to be a bit more cautious? (He,He,He)

Do you have / use rod holders?

I have the nav 175 full windshield model. I put rails on the back for rod holders so the cleats are under the rails. Can’t get a rod under those. For the front ones, they are back close enough to the windshield that I don’t have issues getting rods under them, but I am pretty careful. I snapped a legend tournament on a boat cleat on my old boat. That was enough of a lesson for me to be very careful now. Somebody did post some cleat modification ideas a while back though, but I don’t remember who it was.

I also broke too many rods that slide under my cleats. I installed one of those you show in picture #2 just to try. I think it’s an Atwood. It’s a little scary to drill big holes in the relatively narrow gunwale of my Lund Explorer 1725. But they were easy enough to install and work GREAT.
My problem is I couldn’t figure out a way to get a pliers or socket in there from the bottom to tighten the nut. So I applied Lock-Tite and tightened as much as I could with my fingers. It’s nice and solid, but I do wish I could find a way to use a tool to tighten it more.

I’ve got ones just like in pic 2. They were factory installed on my boat. Very nice. Pop them up when you want them, push em down the rest of the time. $50 each is probably more than I would want to spend on them, but they are nice.

They’re expensive, but I’ll never own another boat without these moormates

I really like rope cleats and they are easy to use. And you cant get anything in the pinch points.

Thanks Mikey Yes, almost busted another last weekend – you were close enough that you would have heard the

It happens when I am using two rods or when I set one down to grab the net – must just be at the wrong angle but I have heard of others having the same issue.

I’ve got to do something – even just a wedge or something to fix it until I do something more permanent. I looked at another Alumacraft and they had the cleats mounted under the gunnel or on the side facing into the boat.

Or just tie the anchor to the winch eye-bolt on the bow and take the cleats off entirely.

Thanks for the advice. I’m going to block them for now and keep looking for a replacement.

Mikey, I was thinking about your comment, you have the Magnum which has the 8″ wide gunnel (or so) and that could be what prevents you from this issue. The Nav. has the narrow 3-4″ gunnel and that puts the cleats that much closer to the angle of the rods when set down.

I installed 4 of these mostly for hanging bumpers for docking. LOVE EM!
