Question 60 Amp Breakers for Terrova

I have a four wire system for the front and rear trolling motor plug ins. I have 2 positive and 2 negative wires to each battery for a total of 8 wires. All 4 positive wires have an inline fuse. The 24 volt connection is a jumper in the trolling motor plug. I need to hook in a 60 amp circuit breaker for my 80lb Terrova. The Terrova blows the fuses when on high. I am going to take the inline fuses out of the system. How would I wire the breaker in, and do I only need one?

    Thanks

I had the same wire hook up but not using the rear plug. Both red wires to the front plug had fuses so my thought was I spent big bucks for the trolling motor whats a few bucks for the fuses for protection.

The fuses will not take the draw the Terrova puts on them. They keep blowing

I am sorry I guess I needed to say that I replaced the 40amp fuses that came with the old motor with 60 amp for the Terrova. I hope that you are not blowing 60 amp fuses.

Wire the breaker the same as your fuse is wired now. I had the fuses in my boat and when I stepped to the Terrova last summer I had to do the 60 amp breaker. Wired it inline just like the fuse was and have had no problems.

I had 40 amp breakers on mine and they would trip, I replaced them with 50 amp it got by. you will need to have breakers on both hot red 12v leads going up to the plug. Put the breakers on place of the fuses. I suspect the attached photo is what you have?

Thanks Kirt I thought I would need 2 breakers.

+1. I noticed mine doing the same thing once last fall. Never did it again until recent P4 trip. Running upstream on 10 to get unsnagged, and it tripped out several time. Glad this thread came along.

Yah last I fished in ???? tournament and I would get into the weeds and the prop would load up with weeds and pop the brkr darn grass carp. Shhh dont tell BK I fished for grass carp

Just an FYI be aware that fuses/breakers are there to prvent a meltdown or overloading the wire, if you have lets #8 wire if you put a 60 amp in you may overload the wire, 50 amp is what I did with #8. This year I replace the #8 with #6 2 wire set up, with a 60 amp brkr.

So far, I have not had an issue with my 50 amp breaker, so what you are saying is, if you have a 60 amp breaker, you might have to rewire your boat to a larger diameter/gauge wire size? Seems I’d rather have the motor cut out at 50 amps rather than cooking a wire, or burning up a circuit board(which I did in the past). From what I have been told, most the amperage/heat build up has to do with corrosion issues on the terminals-which I could see rearing their ugly heads with a higher draw.

When i went with a 50 also I had no more tripping issues either, but I decided to go with 101 this year .

Going in after them carp no matter where they are huh??

I have the 80# Terrova and have a 50 on each of the two positive terminals, so far no problems.

Not sure what 6 or 8 wire is rated for, but I doubt you’d want the wire rating less than the fuse is.

Stats for wire gauge and amp capabilities at 18 feet. The shorter the run the higher the amperage. I am also wondering since my system is four wire how it affects these numbers?

For 24-volt systems on 18 feet of wire length, select the gauge requirements.

If the current required is 5 amps or less, use 18 gauge wire.

If the current required is 6-10 amps, use 14 gauge wire.

If the current required is 11-15 amps, use 12 gauge wire.

If the current required is 16-30 amps, use 10 gauge wire.

If the current required is 31-40 amps, use 8 gauge wire.

If the current required is 41-80 amps, use 6 gauge wire.

If the current required is 81-100 amps, use 2 gauge wire.

I too am getting a 101 this year, do you know what the draw is on a 101? I know I’ll need to up the wire size so I just as well do it now being it isn’t here yet.

    Mark,

I rewired my boat with 6 gauge, stranded marine grade wire with a 60 amp self resetting breaker last March when I went to a 101 I-Pilot Terrova from my old 24v system. All wiring, connectors, plugs and batteries new, Completely new system! It does rather well in my 99″ Lund, 1950 Tyee

I had e-mailed Minnkota and that was their suggestion as well. At the time I was unable to find the information listed above, many of the dealers thought I didn’t need the change and now they think differently if asked.

Does anyone have pictures of how they installed their breakers? Looking for a clean way to mount 4 of them (i have a bow and transom mount both 24v). I have some idea but im sure you guys have better ideas

My 50 amp breakers mount right on the batteries.

Hey Mike, are you still using 50 amps? I am working on wiring a xi5 24 volt. I believe I have 8 gauge wire now but not sure. Cant see a number on the wire. Had a power drive with 40 amp circuit breaker but not sure if I need to change the wire or not. Will up grade to 50 amp circuit breaker or 60 most likely. Wiring is in the bow only about 5 feet to plug or less.

Also, is wiring in series necessary or is it feasible to just run a jumper wire?
