I just bought a new trolling motor and I’m going from a 24v system to a 36v system. I have a few questions:

    1. Has anyone used the starting battery in sequence with the(2) other batteries for the trolling motor to make up the 36v system?

    2. Can I run a Dual Charger for the 1st (2) batteries and a single charger for the 3rd? I have a dual and single and really don’t want to spend the extra $$ on a 3-bank charger

    3. Do I have to buy a 4th battery? I’ve heard of people doing it both ways. Just want to make sure I’m not setting it up incorrectly.

    thanks in advance

I bought the same motor you did last year. I would buy the 4th battery otherwise you may end up draining the starting battery by accident then you’ll be stuck on the lake/river. You can use the chargers you have, I did.

I have my starting battery isolated from everything. The only thing that is connected to that battery is the motor. It is not fun shuffling batteries around in the dark hoping one has enough juice left to turn over the big motor

Don’t use your starting battery. Buy a 3rd trolling motor battery the same size as your existing 2. The starting battery will drain faster and doesn’t have as many stored amps, so your performance of the 36 volt will drop quickly and you will be wondering why you upgraded to the 101# at all.

How old are your existing batteries? It may make sense to sell the existing two and replace with 3 new. Remember that your system will be only as good as the worst battery.

And yes, you can hook up the single bank to the 3rd trolling motor battery and continue using the 2 bank as well rather than having to upgrade to a 3 bank

Thanks guys. I was planning on buying a 4th but heard it could be set up thru the starting battery. The only positive that I thought of with running it with the starting battery was not having the extra weight from the 4th battery.

    Let the good times begin
