Terrova Issues

I used my Terrova today for the first time on my new boat.
I am not getting full power when I use the motor. I have a full carge on batteries, but can only get .9 mph with a 24 volt 80 lb motor. On any speed past 8 my prob spins 5 or 6 times and pauses then 5 or 6 times and pauses. Also when I turn AP on it works for a couple of seconds and then the head starts spinning. Not to happy with the maiden voyage of my new boat. I could use some pointers.

Sounds like your 24 volt motor is not getting 24 volts. Be sure the wiring is correct to your batteries….and make sure there are no “factory” splices, or connections that could mess up the circuit under the floor or in the gunwales. Also, some plugs have a “jumper” wire built in on the plug. Bottom line……when your motor is plugged in to your boat….test the motor side of the connection and be sure you’re getting 24 volts.

Check the voltage at the motor, then work your way back connections, brkr tripped. Is this the first time out with the new motor?

I had the same issue with mine the first time out. Thought the motor had a problem. After a lot of playing I found out the circuit breaker was resetting so fast I couldn’t see the power light go out. Changed out the 50 amp breaker for a 60 and the problem went away. Good luck. They will dray 58 amps on full power.

ck the voltage issues the others said here

sure sounds like a breaker or wiring problem

I dont have breakers on my system, but 2 50 amp square fuses. One at the end of the positive from the motor and one on the positive on the jump. Will I have to use 2 of the Humminbird breakers and install them in the same spots? Sorry for the dumb question on this. I’m just not an expert on wiring. Thanks for the help guys!

    That system calls for 60amp.
However, since you are using fuses they should blow when pulling WOT.

I just bought the Minnkota breaker yesterday at Fleet farm, I think it was $40. Also,I do not belive there needs to be one on the jumper.

Personally, I would check the voltage though. I think that you will find it low and that is the problem, and get 60amps to it too. -Mark

mine was working fine last year then … Started losing power way before I thought I should so… bought new batteries. Same problem, Checked my breaker connection. Took sandpaper to the tab that connects to the battery post and Plus I got new batteries. Good luck, love the Terrova, glad I got it.

I just took my plug panel off and tested the wires with my volt meter. It looks like I am getting 24 volts at the ends of the wires where they attach to the female plug. When I tried testing the plug by putting the probes in the holes I got no reading. I used the motor again today and same power issue and Auto Pilot works for just a few seconds befor spinning around. Any other ideas? Is it possible that i have 24 volts at the end of my wires, but the female plug is not working right?

That’s the key, easy enough to get 24v to the plug, getting both plugs wired correctly is more often than not the issue.

In my case I had the factory wiring to the plug, I knew that was good, I however didn’t have my male plug wired correctly. You also have to be sure to have the right plugs, I can’t tell you exactly what the difference is, but you have to make sure they are both 24v plugs.

I still think you probably have a wiring issue, then again, never hurts to call Minn Kota and see what they think, in my experience their customer service is very good.

Could be that the terminal plugs are corroded.

I have the 80lb Terrova with 50 amp autostop breaker-have not had it pop yet. Mine is wired positive wire off first battery, negative of first jumped to postive of 2nd battery and negative wire off the negative pole of the 2nd battery. That way, only one red wire and one black wire going to the plug. Seems somewhere you are not getting 24 volts and rewiring is an easy fix. You can get male and female plug/recepticles with only two wires. Makes it easy when only dealing with one red and one black

    Good luck.

OK… Here is where I am at. I have clean posts, 24 volts at the end of the leads leading to the female plug, and 24 volts on the wires on the back of the male plug when it is plugged in. The prop spins at what I would guess is regualar speed when the motor is out of the water, but when it is in it is very slow. If I’ve gotten this far am I safe to say I probably have an issue with the motor itself. Especially since the auto pilot doesn’t hold its bearing after a few seconds and then just spins around? Calling a local minn kota service center in the morning…

Probably not it, but you can have 24 volts and not enough amps to power it.

I have no idea where you are located but if you are in the twin cities the Motor Clinic in Bloomington would be the place to take it. They are a factory authorized sevice center and have a huge inventory of parts so their turn around time is really good.
