Line backing question?

I was reading a recent post about fireline questions and backing. When using braid for pitching and casting are most people using mono backing? It makes a lot of sense to use backing on vertical jigging rod/reel setups. To get good casting distance does braid hang up on the mono when backing is used. I am going to spool a bunch of reels with 832 and am wondering which ones I should use backing on.

    Thanks.

all of my bait casters have the vented spools so i tie directly to the spool eliminating the need for backing. on my spinning reels I tie directly to the line tab on the side of the reel again eliminatiing the need for backing.

Not an expert, but the casting wouldn’t be an issue as you really shouldn’t get that far into the spool.

I use all spinning rods, running Power Pro on them. Use backing on them all, except a few where I started just using electrical tape to fill some of the spool. Knew I still had plenty of line with the small diameter, so figured why even bother with the backing.

I had a multi-strand crystal line on my open faced reel last year and couldn’t figure out why I couldn’t get my drag set tight enough to bring in the fish. Later I found out that the line was spinning on my spool, even though I thought I had it tightly tied on. So, I think the reason for putting mono filament backer is to grip the spool. Because the multi-stranded lines have higher strength, then one uses smaller diameter line giving more distance to the cast. One is easily able to spool more line than the original rating for the mono, so the mono filament backing is going to be buried and not a factor.

In my opinion you can save a little money by using backing and spooling multiple reels with the superline.

On all my spinning reels not used on Lake MI, I put 100 yrds of Cajun Line. So from a 300 yrd spool, I’m getting 3 spools X2. For first time fills, I reel up 100yrds of braid, attach my filler/backing and finish filling the spool to desired amount. Then have one of my kids walk the line across my back yard, and I reverse it. I have my daughter keeping the line very snug as I reel it up so it is on the spool tight.

After a part of the season, and the line begins to show too much wear, I walk tou the braid until I hit the backing. Cut it off, and reverse the Cajun Braid to use the other end of the segment of line.

Once the line is deteriorated too much, and both ends have been exhausted, easy to fill up, as I already have my backing set for the precise amount.

Good tip on doing that Randy. Much better than the just guessing and then ending up short on the third spool.

I use mono backing on everything. It won’t slip on the spool like others stated, and then when you change line, you only change your top 100yds or less of good line and leave the backing. Saves money. 20$ spool of braid compared to 6$ for some mono backing.

How do you guys measure out your line exactly? Thats one thing I havent figured out yet.

I would assume some type of line counter, but whats cheap and works good?

I have taken a 100 foot tape and measured out 100 feet and put electric fence post or something that you can run the line around and not pull out of ground. Have also used a small tree limb, just measure out the distance that U what to use. then go back and forth till U get what U want.

I got a tree out back that I trimed a limb on that is about a half inch thick. It is 100 feet to my garage door. So the measuement is done. So now come each spring I check my reels to see if I have been shorted with to many break offs

    Clothes line pole works too

Its 100′ from the edge of my garage to lot line ,225′ to edge of neighbors drive,300′ to bush in neighbors yard & 450′ to the end of my street. Most kids are generally real helpfull when it comes to fishing stuff! Send them home with a snickers bar & a can of Dew or powerade in their gullet & they willing to help & are pretty charged up. Their mom can get charged up as well when she finds out kids are on sugar overload.

An “S” line from the front to the back 3x’s on my property is 450′. 3x’s depth of 150′. Anyway it works for me!

Use backing on all of them. You don’t want your line spinning on the spool. You also will be able to fill 2 reels instead of one if you use backing (Fireline ain’t cheap!) No it shouldn’t hang up during casting, unless you are the world record caster, it shouldn’t go that deep into the spool.

I fill by spools with some line backing as well. Rarely would I ever cast over 50 yards so filling the spool up is a good thing for me.

X2 – Back corner of garage to near side rear corner pin on my property line is 302′. Rear corner pin to other rear pin is 297′ So, I’m fortunate to have the space to have the kids run it out for me. I also have a measuring wheel for walking out jobs. Common for me to keep it under the seat of the truck for walking through jobs. When I’m traveling and need to set up a new reel, it comes in handy to have.
I also heard the cheap line counters that clip onto your rod work pretty good. I think that might be too complicated
