Johnson 4 stroke

Broke in the new boat Saturday on Pool 4 and have a couple of questions for the board.

First, how fast should a guy expect a 140 Johnson 4 stroke to push a Fishhawk 1850. I was getting very different readings from the graph and gps . Which is more accurate.

Has anyone had trouble with their electrical system on a vehicle? I have a 5 pin harness and am not getting power to the blue wire, which operates the brake release, when backing up a trailer. I know the problem is with my truck. When I flip the harness around and turn on the headlights power gets to the blue wire and releases the brakes.
Is this something that is easily fixed?

Lastly, any tips for fishing with Stillakid would be greatly appreciated I have partnered up with him for the IDA Walleye Tour and wanted to know what to expect.

First off, you forgot the most important part — how did you do Saturday?

On to business. As far as mph — the gps is always more accuate.

My uncle also has a Johnson 140 4-stroke but on a 2003 Sportfish 1850 (close to the same boat). The fastest he’s had his rig is 40 on the gps trimmed out with a light chop. I was suprized and expected more from the motor, but that’s all it has for his set-up. On the other hand, I run a 17′ Trophy with a 115 Johnson 2-stroke.. I was shocked to pull away from him as we ran from the north end of Mille Lacs to Hunter’s last fall. I show 43 on the gps max. One more comparison would be to my brother in laws Sporthawk 1850 with a 150 Yamaha 2-Stroke (also a 2003). He ran 47 on the oem prop and runs 53 now with a new hustler stainless prop.

    Hope that helps!

I have a 2004 Sportfish w/115 Johnson 4 stroke w/19 pitch prop and I run 42mph.I just picked up a 21 pitch to see how much it will tach.It should take me up around 45+ and hopefully tach around 5500-5800 rpms.I love this boat!

Don’t trust the gauge reading, gauges ALWAYS lie P

    JickyJack,

I had 2 keepers on Saturday and did not weigh them in. Both walleye one was 17 the other 18 inches. Also caught some sauger on the small side.

My GPS read 39 mph, and the graph resistered 48. Sure felt a lot closer to 48. Either way its a great boat.

No tips on Stillakid, what have I done ?

I did meet him the other night and filled out our entry form. Seems like a great guy and look forward to the IDA events.

I am going by my depth finder speedometer which is pretty close to the radar gun(well within 1 mph). GPS reaings on the water isn’t “truely” accurate do to the contour on the bottom vs. the flat water level or so everyone tells me.It makes sense if one ponders about it.

GPS readings are as accurate as you are ever going to get with todays technology. The GPS is not reading the bottom?

On your trailer wiring, I have my electric trailer brake release hooked up to the back-up lights, that way it releases whenever you put the tow vehicle in reverse. Yours must be wired into the parking lights.

GPS speeds are derived by triangulating satellite signals and are much more accurate than any speedometer ever could be. In fact, the speedometers that come with most boats are so consistently inaccurate that most people discount their information for the most part. There are some speed calibrated speedos available, they are quite expensive and my understanding is that they still fall short of GPS accuracy. If you’ve got a factory speedo I would suggest that it is quite likely to be very inaccurate when compared to the GPS readings.

I agree with ~H2O~ but will add the following…

GPS will give you a speed over ground reading. (Ground being key here.) If you have a GPS reading at 47 MPH going downstream on a river that is flowing at 2 MPH, your actual boat speed is 45 MPH. Just something to keep in mind…

Yet, you’ll find yourself confused again when realizing you’ve only been traveling 45 mph, but actually traveled 47 miles in that hour! Sorry Jon………… that just struck a funny cord with me.

Tom — Seems like 39 is right there. And you’re right, it’s horkin’ on the water. A bit different conditions, less fuel, etc and don’t be suprized if you hit 40-41.

Next time out check your RPM’s. My uncle’s came factory at (if I remember right) about 5600 which is on the low side. Drop me a PM, I’d be interested in knowing how your motor compares. I think they can run slightly in excess of 6000 (propped) and still be within factory specs.

    Tom,
Congrats on the new boat. I run a 2003 1850 Fish Hawk with a Suzuki 140 4 stroke. I have hit just over 44 mph gps with a lite load. If you are looking for the best top end speed, you could adjust motor height and try different props. Send me a pm if you have any other questions.

    Hey Tom.
I saw you on the water Saturday and gave you the thumbs up.
That’s one sweet looking new rig you’re driving.
I’m sure it will treat you well.

    JickyJack,

I am going to hit Pool 4 with Stillakid on Saturday and will keep a close eye on the RPM’s and let you know.

Sandbar I sent you a PM about your prop

Crossin Eyes……Thanks for the thumbs up and yes this rig will be babied. I had a 1600 Fishhawk for 3 years and it was just a little on the small side. This 1850 is perfect.
