Has anbody tried downsizing treble hooks on their blade baits. The hooks look so big on them. I think it would help keep from hanging up. Or would this hurt hookups?

Or am I thinking too much.

Yes I have tried using smaller hooks on blades, and it really helps prevent your hooks from hanging up all the time. I don’t think there were less hook ups by down sizing either. Just don’t go to small. If fishing 1/2 oz blade try using a #6 hook, and try a #8 for 1/4 oz blades.

I use 8s on my 1/4 ozers. Get the VMC split trebels if possible.

Any one tried split rings on them instead of split trebles? I loose them fast enough I shouldnt even be thinking about trying to make them more expensive. Down about 50 of them learning to work seams last year!

You don`t want to use split rings it allows the hooks to get up over the blade bait and line causing it to foul. They foul enough with out the split rings.

Most tend to go with bigger hooks, not smaller, due to far better hook ups. You wouldn’t think, but serious blade bait guys get PRETTY specific about the hooks they put on them–they also have accepted the fact that they will lose a lot of blades in certain locations-

I replace my std split trebles with Eagle Claw triple grip wide bends. The angle provides a far better hook up rate and does not hang up on the blade…#6 on 1/4oz and #4 on 1/2oz.
I’ve had split trebles come off several times for no apparent reason…
You need a good quality pair of small side cutters to open the hook eye, clip it on the hanger(hole on the blade) then close it with a pliers.
We catch a lot of fish on these blades and I have never had a treble come off yet installed this way.

I’ve always wondered about just clipping the eye, bending it, and then soldering it back up.
