Trolling Motor Question

Well, I went and ordered a ’04 1600ss Explorer, with a Yamaha 75 4-stroke! I’m moving from a 1959 Alumacraft 16′ row boat with an 18hp Evinrude, to the Explorer. I was wondering about the trolling motor. I ordered mine with a 55lb bow mount and I intend on fishing the wing dams a whole bunch. Is that going to be enough of a motor to allow me to work efficiently? I could move up to a 65lb 24v if I want. I’m not getting a T8 this year, but maybe next for trolling. Any and all feedback is greatly appreciated, as always.

my thoughts on trolling motors that will be used on the river is simple.Get the biggest one you can for the money. You can always turn it down if not needed

    Hi Jeff,
In my opinion you cannot have too many lbs of thrust. Although the 55 lb motor will push the boat around just fine, mark my words there will be days when the wind will blow you around and you will will you had more power to offset the condition. You hate to be at the mercy of wind or current and have to change your approach when fishing an area – especially in tournament conditions. I use a Minn Kota 74 lb Maxxum US and would have even went to the 101 lb if I had room for a 4th battery back there. Also, make sure you get a long enough shaft as you can run into rough water scenarios with the troller popping in and out of the water – makes for a rough day.
Now is a good time to upgrade as it will not break the bank like it would a year from now if you would upgrade. Hate to have to buy a complete motor when you can just pay for an upgrade now.
    Hope this helps.

I sincerely appreciate the replies. If I had used the “search” option, I would have seen this question was recently addressed. I think I am much more excited/anxious than I am prepared to admit.
