The latest news direct from Garmin is that the Garmin 172C, the 178C, the 250C, and the 250 will all begin shipping at the end of March (that’s a tentative estimate). Right now, all is on schedule for an end of March release date but they say they will not begin mass shipping until they have enough units to distribute in sufficient amounts. I will continue to update on our Jolly Ann Marine & Outdoor website.
In a google search I just did for garmin 178C shipping, I
saw another web site stating that it wouldn’t ship till
late april – early may.
Just looking for more information on the expected ship date of the garmin gpsmap 178C…..
David, That’s correct. We’ve got April/May listed on our site too. The 250 and 250C has started shipping but can still be hard to come by (especially the 250C but it should be easier to get soon). The 172C is supposed to start shipping sometime this month. The 178C is now scheduled to begin shipping end of April/beginning of May. One thing everyone should know when you’re looking to purchase electronics that have not been officially released yet is that these release dates are always tentative dates. Very seldom do the products actually start shipping “on time”. Garmin, for example, does rigorous quality control on new releases. I believe it’s 2 out of every 10 units that get pulled from the assembly line for testing. If there’s a problem, the whole bunch goes back. It’s better for the manufacturer and the end customer that all quality control problems are handled before that unit is installed on a boat. This tends to delay the release of new products. This is odd timing,
I surfed your site earlier today for the 178C.
It still stated:
“Expected Availability:
1st Quarter 2004″
So I counted to myself Jan, Feb, Mar
hey, this is now the 2nd qtr.
And was thinking of asking this exact same question.
Maybe it’s true “great minds think alike” 
Yep, they missed the “expected date” but if you scroll down to where the pricing info is you’ll read “Item is not in stock yet. Garmin informs us that they will be shipping these April/May 2004.” I think I’ve changed that date 3 times now. Hopefully this will be the last!
