Jig Heads

I know about the B Fish N H20 Precision Jigs, but they’re $0.60 a piece! They’re worth that with the good paint jobs and the premo hooks, but I lose a fair number of them. Is there an econimical option for jig heads with the larger hooks (like 2/0) and in the lighter “in-between” weights like 3/32 and 3/16? I’d love to see H20 precision jigs available unpainted with standard mustad hooks for more like a quarter a piece, or even painted for $0.35 or so… Has anyone found them? Thanks!

    John,

I think B-Fishn’ is working on that right now. Maybe Mike Little will stop by here and fill us all in on what he has planned for the Precision jigs .

I have not seen another jig with the quality design and paint job of the precision jig in those sizes. I do pour some of my own jigs with oversize hooks but not in the sizes you mentioned above .

    Mike you out there??

John, the Main Channel bait shop makes all kinds of jigs with oversized hooks. High quality and good pricing. they can be reached toll free at 1-866-219-2191. Or you can reach them through River Guiding which has a link at this sites entrance. Order early as they get very busy.

River Guiding is Jared F., I believe. Perhaps he can fill me in on the Main Channel bait shop jigheads? I may put a call in to them today, too.

I may have found an option. I found a manufacturer that will make them, but the minimum quantity is 50. I may get them unpainted and just powder-paint them myself. I’ll post here when I get it figured out in the next couple of days.

Seems to me that there is a business opportunity here…

    Thanks for the help, guys.

    Hey, John and all,

We’ve been working on doing a few things to cut the prices of the jig heads. Very hard, in fact. Two things that will help.

One is that we’ll be offering the unpainted versions very soon. Should be around $.20 – $.25 each, maybe less. That’s going to help a lot and you all should be able to get a good supply of them that way.

The other is that we’ve been working to improve the molds and the efficiency of manufacture, which will really show a remarkable improvement in cost. We’re thinking that a price of around $.45 or so might help a little bit. 25% reduction? What do you think?

In any case, the biggest problem has been involved in working out the bugs of manufacture. Not surprisingly, the molds, with marks and so forth, are a little tough to make, but I think that we may have the problems and supply resolved very shortly.

We had hoped to have product by mid month this month, but will definitely have it within a matter of days now. Glitches and faults rest with me. I changed manufacturers mid-stream in December and have been frustrated with the progress in getting samples made to our satsifaction. It will be resolved. We never give up.

Hey Mike… don’t sweat this stuff. The only way these guys can compete with your jigs is on price ‘cuz they can’t touch the quality! I’ve seen some knock-off attempts. They stink. End of story. It is funny that a guy will drop 55 cents on a one of those well-known jigs that get fished with a stinger that comes with a cheap eagle claw hook and paint that shatters the first time it hits a rock but you’re expected to make jigs with one of the most expensive premium hooks available, air brush on some of the most expensive and durable paint on the market… and do it for the same money as a regular round head…lol

I do like the idea of getting hands on un-painteds though and making them available in larger quantities is a good idea to lower the per piece price for those guys that really use alot of them. Like me.

    John23,

The jigs that my dad and I tie are hair jigs with a unique style of head. These are great for cutting current and getting to the bottom quickly. Most people use these for vertical jigging.

The H20 jigs are awesome. I wish I could find more. These are unique because they have all the sizes one has a hard time finding. Like the sizes that are available in the 32nd and 64th sizes. Especially great for plastics.

FisherFlick jigs only come in 1/8 oz. increments.

I think the prices mentioned for unpainted H20 jigs sounds great. $0.20 would be awesome, and $0.25 isn’t bad either.

$0.45 is a very reasonable price for the current H20 jighead. I’ll mention again that I think the premium paint and hooks definitely justify cost, but they don’t make me want to buy.

I’m a former tackle mfg. myself (muskie stuff, so a little different) and understand some of the issues faced here. The 10% excise tax ain’t the least on ’em! Premium components are nice, but I think jigs are a quantity item. It would cost a fortune to keep 10 H20’s of each color and size in my boat, which is what I’d like to do. At $0.20 ea. I could paint them myself and do just that.

I did find a mfg. (Gopher Tackle – see http://www.gophertackle.com/mushroomjig.html) that would do custom heads in ALL the sizes. Their mushroom heads are great in my experience, but almost as costly as the H20 jigs. Same deal, though: super premium. I asked about cheaper jigs and he told me that he could make the following with gamakatsu hooks, unpainted: (jig size followed by hook size) 1/32 with 1; 1/16 with 1/0; 3/32 with 2/0; 1/8 with 2/0; 3/16 with 2/0; and 1/8 with 2/0. His price was $0.40/ea, minimum quantity of 50. I’d say that’s pretty decent for the right size gamakatsu hook in the right amount of lead. I haven’t heard back from him on a price for those same jigs with standard mustad hooks, which is what I want. His price for unpainted jigs with mustads is $2.50/10 with regular-size hooks, and I expect that with the larger hooks and a quantity of 50 I’d be in the same $0.20-$0.25 range that was mentioned for unpainted H20 jigs.

I don’t mind sharpening hooks at all. Mustads pull free from snags more often, too, because they bend easier than the premos.

Just my $0.02. Probably not worth that, and definitely not worth as much as an H20 head!

    John

I have to add one thing: Mike, please email me right away when you have new prices/availability. I agree with James where he said that you have a great quality product. I really like the shape of the head, the wire barb for the grub, and the pearl paints. [email protected] Thanks!

I also would like to know what prices the unpainted jigs would sell for. I would be more willing to pitch those into the areas of ”no return structure. ”
    Thanks, Bill

The un-painted heads sound good to me. More economical for us guys who like to toss those things in to some nasty shoreline cover

FYI, I received a reply from Gopher Tackle on the custom jigheads. The unpainted heads I mentioned with standard mustad hooks run $0.35 each with a minimum order of 50. The standard heads (same heads, same type hook, but with “regular” hook sizes) run $0.25 each. The price I mentioned earlier for heads was for painted custom heads with standard hooks, not unpainted with gamakatsu as I mistakenly mentioned.

Gopher is the only place (besides H2O) I’ve found that has the in-between sizes available with larger hooks… If there are any other options out there for our “specialty” heads, I’d like to hear about them!

I’m counting the days now. Hopefully first of the week for samples, with unpainted jigs right behind them. I’ll post and let you all know when we have them.
