I think the prices mentioned for unpainted H20 jigs sounds great. $0.20 would be awesome, and $0.25 isn’t bad either.
$0.45 is a very reasonable price for the current H20 jighead. I’ll mention again that I think the premium paint and hooks definitely justify cost, but they don’t make me want to buy.
I’m a former tackle mfg. myself (muskie stuff, so a little different) and understand some of the issues faced here. The 10% excise tax ain’t the least on ’em! Premium components are nice, but I think jigs are a quantity item. It would cost a fortune to keep 10 H20’s of each color and size in my boat, which is what I’d like to do. At $0.20 ea. I could paint them myself and do just that.
I did find a mfg. (Gopher Tackle – see http://www.gophertackle.com/mushroomjig.html) that would do custom heads in ALL the sizes. Their mushroom heads are great in my experience, but almost as costly as the H20 jigs. Same deal, though: super premium. I asked about cheaper jigs and he told me that he could make the following with gamakatsu hooks, unpainted: (jig size followed by hook size) 1/32 with 1; 1/16 with 1/0; 3/32 with 2/0; 1/8 with 2/0; 3/16 with 2/0; and 1/8 with 2/0. His price was $0.40/ea, minimum quantity of 50. I’d say that’s pretty decent for the right size gamakatsu hook in the right amount of lead. I haven’t heard back from him on a price for those same jigs with standard mustad hooks, which is what I want. His price for unpainted jigs with mustads is $2.50/10 with regular-size hooks, and I expect that with the larger hooks and a quantity of 50 I’d be in the same $0.20-$0.25 range that was mentioned for unpainted H20 jigs.
I don’t mind sharpening hooks at all. Mustads pull free from snags more often, too, because they bend easier than the premos.
Just my $0.02. Probably not worth that, and definitely not worth as much as an H20 head!

I have to add one thing: Mike, please email me right away when you have new prices/availability. I agree with James where he said that you have a great quality product. I really like the shape of the head, the wire barb for the grub, and the pearl paints. [email protected] Thanks!
