I Pilot, lakemaster and humminbird

For those on the fence about the I Pilot, here is the number of times we anchored on the Rainy Lake trip: ZERO.

I will never diss the anchor and love to drop the hook, but we repositioned multiple times per reef due to having this technology.

Humminbird and Lakemaster chip: Phenomonal. 1 foot contours and humminbird depth features made finding structure a breeze and keeping out of shallow water trouble worryfree. We didn’t blast around the lake at warp nine, but the chip never let us down.

Now, if someone could have turned off the wind machine.

I second this trio. I had the I-pilot and covinced myself a few months ago to buy a humminbird (because I would have eventually) and then the lakemaster chip. Great for pre-fishing, finding reefs, locking on the reef structure, etc. I think I may have sold another I-pilot or 2 based on others watching the effort required in wind with be able to lock, move in a direction, control speed, etc. I should probably ask for a commish,

    Doc,
    Can you disable the I-Pilot?

If so, could you please do it while fishing with a certain IDO Reporter. I know Pete loves to haul an anchor up from 40+ feet of water
Plus he was told to bulk up a little.

I agree Doc! The I-pilot is definitely not a replacement for the anchor but works well in certain conditions like we saw on Rainy Lake

Not trying to be a smart and I don’t have any i- pilot, but it has been approved for next Spring. So my questions is, when would you use an anchor over the spot lock feature on the i-pilot? The only thing that I have thought about is if I want to hold the boat at a specific angle.

    Thanks,

I’m already thinking of a place or so on the LOW/Rainy River in a month to use the combination of both the anchor and I Pilot! Other than that I may keep the anchor in the boat.

When you dont want to drop the trolling motar

for me its mainly at night/ extreme wind / hot spot/ limited battery power, although I will admit the ancor hasnt left its box in a while, great investment

I cant wait for the day they link the motars to the birds!!I had dreams for years of this!!

I use my spot lock on the I-pilot almost exclusvely as opposed to dropping an anchor, it’s about the only function I use.

When there is little to no wind the I-Pilot can do a little twisting around at times. It works flawless with any wind direction to point the nose into. I utilize an anchor still if in very light wind.

The i pilot is based off a GPS signal, so will wander a bit due to the scrambling of the signal (which has gotten less over the years). Current seams, high flow, high wind (even though we used it effectively in the wind) and needing to stay in one spot so not to drift into other boats would definitely qualify for the anchor. IMHO, there is no replacement for the anchor, but this is one cool tool to make you a more efficent fisherperson.

Think I will leave the spotlock intact Slider, as Pete usually brings really good snacks.

I will agree 100% with this talk. I do not have the I-Pilot and on the RLH trip I was very jealous of some of these folks. It will definitely be my next purchase. I assume you need a sonar/GPS combo for this to work, correct? or will a sonar only work?

anybody want to buy a power drive, 80 lb thrust, mint condition, AP/US??

It has its own GPS so no you do not need a separate GPS
    for the i-Pilot to function.

Thanks for pointing that out Dan, it has it’s own GPS reciever. No need for seperate GPS-sonar to make the thing work.

Joe – BTW, I thought the 1197 was your next purchase???

Although those Lowrances must be TOUGH to handle all those solid right hooks you were dishing out during all those GPS and mapping malfunctions… Too bad your mount wasn’t up to the challenge….

As most stated already, the I-Pilot is a great tool and a must have to help aid anglers in catching fish in some situations. Used it on rainy plenty our selves but when the winds really get cooking the anchor is a must have tool! Especially when the waves are to big to keep the trolling motor shaft in the water long enough to keep it going the right direction

Been using the I pilot more and more, especially during rainny weather when I hide under the top instead of sitting up front..:)

Do find the spot lock works pretty well, except for bobber fishing, then I use a anchor or two to stay pointed in one direction, which the spot lock won’t do.
