Another well timed post…I’m looking for an Anchor. This is one item that never comes up in the swap forum.
February 19, 2004 at 8:02 pm #293022They didn’t show the navy anchor. I guess nobody uses those much anymore. I swear by my 28 pounder.

I know they are very heavy and bulky, but it still is the only thing in my boat. They are great for any type of a bottom. Maybe I will have to look for a new one that isn’t so clumbersome.
February 19, 2004 at 11:58 pm #293420I too was disappointed that they didn’t mention the Navy anchor. I checked around some more and came up with the Chene anchor shown in the link below. I just got a Bass Pro Shops sale catalog in the mail and they had the Chene anchor like the one pictured in the link below on sale for less than this link sales them for. With my back giving me so many problems the past few months I ordered one as it will be much lighter than my Navy anchor. I also ordered a chain to go with it figuring it would help to hold better in all different types of bottoms and in current too even though it says a chain is not needed with this anchor. I will find out and if its not needed then great as it will be all that much lighter. These anchors only weigh 4 lb. for up to a 25 ft. boat, 6 lb. for up to a 30 ft. boat and 7 lb. for up to a 35 ft. boat. I went with the middle one for my 16’6” boat due to current in the river. I will do a product review this summer or before after I have had chances to use it in different situations. Thanks, Bill
JiraPosts: 517February 20, 2004 at 6:06 pm #293500I use a Richter as well.. If anyone hasn’t seen em or doesn’t know the name, here’s a pic.
February 21, 2004 at 2:46 am #293556I also use the Richter anchor. It holds great in the current.

February 22, 2004 at 12:05 am #293266Dave we’ve got the same boat, what size richter do you use on yours?

I use the 25 pounder, how about you ?
I have used a 28 pound Navy, 4-foot of heavy chain and 50 foot of rope for as long as I can remember. This setup has followed me throught several boats and never let me down!
I will admit my lower back is starting to let me down. So, this winter I have purchased the Chene anchor, 4-foot of coated chain and 100 feet of rope.

February 22, 2004 at 2:39 pm #293649Looks like a good one Derek. Just checked the dealer network and they all seem to be many liteyears away from my area.
February 22, 2004 at 4:49 pm #293665Herb, you can also order on-line.
Jon, I know how you feel. I’m a firm believer in having a good anchor. Once I find fish to slip bobber on, I don’t want to lose my spot. I have been using a 40# river anchor that would hold my boat in anything but my back says its time for something lighter.
February 22, 2004 at 10:44 pm #293695Thats exactly what my back says Derek so I’m trying the Chene anchor hoping it works. Am not a big anchoring fisherman but plan to use it with the grandkids more this year plus once you locate a spot where fish are stacked its a good way to work that spot over good. Thanks, Bill
February 23, 2004 at 11:34 pm #293848I have several anchors in the trees here on Devils Lake that you can have if the water goes down.
The anchor Derek is showing looks like the Richter with some modifications to it.
I use the 18…At least I think I do.
They really get heavy when you try to pull up trees with them. I have a few anchor stories to tell.
JiraPosts: 517February 24, 2004 at 5:08 am #293896I like the double release arms on that ProAnchor — nice improvement.
May 1, 2004 at 2:15 am #303253Has anyone tried the Digger Anchor? I really looks like a beast. Supposed to hold really well in current. Kind of similar to a Chene, but with a break away feature that allows you to pop the tines loose and bring it up with them pointing down. Just wondering if anyone has one and if they like it.

May 1, 2004 at 5:24 pm #303271Hi Gramps,
I have tried the digger anchor and my experiencce was not a good one. This anchor will hold (to some degree if it’s not windy)in soft sand, mud and big rock but once you get in to an area whith hard bottom such as clams, gravel and clay it will not grab grab like it should. Water spike makes the best anchor for various bottom substrate on the market in my opinion and it only weighs 15lbs .
May 1, 2004 at 7:05 pm #303274Left my anchor in taylors falls.
The story of my life.
Had to leave it there 2 weeks ago. Didnt want to do it but she just didnt want to come up of the bottom. I also miss the nice new 50′ rope that I had her tied to. Nothing with to cut it with so over the side it went. When I left there was about 15′ of rope floating on the surface.
Chene or water spike looks to be the next anchor for me.
Had that last one for so long. Kinda felt like I was really leaving something there. Really felt bad about leaving all that rope there for people to snag on. What else could I do?
May 2, 2004 at 12:26 am #303294Here is my anchor, holds in most situations. 100 ft of rope stores very nice in the boat with this set up.

Who says this item never comes up in the swap forum
May 2, 2004 at 11:34 pm #303395Dustin, thanks for the info. Who carries Water Spike anchors? I’ve done some searching, and I can’t seem to find anyone who carries them.

Check with some of your local boat dealers, they will not all have them on hand but they should be able to order them for you .
Click on the below link and scroll to the bottom of the page and you will see what the water spike looks like. It is wider than the chene anchor and holds much better in every situation I have encountered
May 3, 2004 at 12:19 pm #303441I have to agree with Dustin. I have had the Water Spike for the last 3 boats. I have the largest size they make, a 4 foot piece of chain, and 150 feet of rope, and have never had an issue with not getting hooked up. It can be difficult if you are fishing in crowds as you have to let out quite a bit of rope to get it to hold tight. I also have a 15lb navy anchor for those days with little wind or current, or to hold the back of the boat from swinging.
One of the nice things with the Water Spike is they can be collapsed for easy storage. Fits well in the bottom of one of my front compartments.

May 7, 2004 at 12:12 pm #304037Im gonna give the water spike a try this year, i have been using a 20lb navy anchor and holds most times but in heavy current its slip sliding away lol.
A tip for you Mike W, if your anchor is stuck to the bottom and you cant pull it free by hand, try securing the anchor rope to the boat on a tie down or someplace and let the motor do the work for you, most times you will pull it lose that way, or find the weak spot in the line either way its better cause you not losing the anchor, or not leaving that much rope in the water cause the line will snap.Just my thoughts,
