Nightcrawler storage in the boat

I have been doing this for awhile and I am sure some of you do to, but I thought I share this those who have not seen this. I like to keep my boat clean, and fishing with crawlers is a mess, either dirt or bedding all over

Well here is what I have come up with, you need a small 6 pack cooler, ice, paper towels or a small towel and a Lindy Leech Tamer.

Ok, first take a handful of crawlers and put them in a bucket of water and rinse them off, take your cooler put the ice on the bottom and cover the ice with a towel or paper towel, take the clean crawlers and put them in the Leach Tamer, lay the Leech Tamer on the towel and as the ice melts it soaks into the towels keeping the crawlers cool, moist and plump, not to wet just right and your boat and hands clean

I also use a small tupperware to store extra crawlers in bedding and clean them off as needed.

Yeah it’s certainly a great tip, crawler mess sucks. I do remember Scott Steil mentioning a similar idea back when he won a big tourney, but I have to say you explained this much better, and I do believe this sounds like the best way to go with crawlers. Totally forgot about this, was just complaining the other day about crawler dirt in my boat. I just remembered last year how much I like fishing crawlers.

    Thanks

Learned this trick a few years ago. Works awesome. Hate that crawler bedding in the carpeted rig. Just got back from rainy lake and used it a few days.

Are you using real ice cubes or ice packs on the bottom? How many layers of paper towel below the leech tamer? This is a great idea…just got done cleaning the boat from worm mess from last week. Your idea should cure that…thanks

Sounds like a wonderful idea, but how many crawlers can you take at one time. We fish for sturgeon which can require lots of crawlers. Sure hate the mess and would be willing to try this for sure. Thanks for the tip.

Scott also floats his crawlers in a bait tamer in the live well. I do the same for an hour or 2 and they plump up real nice. They also don’t fight back when you are trying to hook them on a slow death or similar rig.

Ice cubes for the moisture, and a couple layers of paper towels.

You can put a couple dozen in a Leech Tamer. I also typically have a cooler full of ice for beveradges so I dip some cubes out to replinish the worm cooler

Real men would use the same cooler for both….

    Thanks for the tip.

Realizing this a 10 year old post, it is still very relevant. Has anyone added a twist by using a frozen ice pack in the bottom? Are all ice paks created equal or do some keep frozen longer than others?

Get a ice pack that freezes closer to 40-50°, it will last longer, I have ice packs for refrigerator temperatures, beer temperatures, and keeping things frozen. They all have their place.
