I want to get a VHF radio for the boat for communicating to locks/dams on the Miss.River and general use.I see they vary from 1-5 watts power so I was wondering if anybody has any opinions/thoughts on power/specific brands etc. on these units? Thanks

    Standard Horizion for $99.<<

After Standard Horizon warrentied my VHF radio after it was out of the warrenty period by a good year, I have a hard time recommending anything but.

I seldom use the H/L power setting on my fixed mount. Now for a hand held unit, there are some battery advantages to using less power.
Btw-I would not buy a VHF that did not have 5 watts, you are already going to have trouble talking with everyone you can hear.

One watt would save on batteries when you’re up at the lock area. You’ll need the five watts and more battery drain further away.

My rechargables are shot and occasionally I load it up with regular AA batteries. at 2 miles from the lock, they can hear me, but seldom. I always hear them.

    Hope that helps!
