I pilot and AP

While fishing around the upper end of Pepin Sunday I was using the Ipilot to run the front Terrova, I tried to use the AP and in the Advanced mode, the trolling motor would just wave back and forth maybe 10-20 degree’s eachway changing directions ever few seconds or less.

The non advanced selection didn’t appear to work at all.

This happened before once when I was down on pool 4, and I haven’t had a chance to try it again, but is there something wrong with my unit or does it just dislike the river?

I guess I’m just trying to see if the river location might bother it for some reason or someone else had the same problem??

We were away from any bluffs and had a clear view to the sky.

I’ll call Motor Clinic tommorrow, but just thought I’d try here first.

Mine seems to do that in big waves but works fine in calm and on choppy water. I think that if it gets out of level it searches more. Let me know what you find out.

Will do, it was pretty wavy that day.

My old AP with the gimbal (?) in it would go off in heavy waves, but I could see that, being the little ball inside the unit would get bounced around, but I thought with GPS that wasn’t suppose to happen??

Try using advance and cruise control at the same time it should compensate for the waves and current

I do run the advanced and cruise control at the same time. In rough water I will stay in the same direction and at the same speed. However the steering does pivot back and forth about 10 to 20 degrees in rough water. It moves at the top of the wave and at the bottom of the wave. Does the same when a boat wake hits.

Normal from what I have seen with mine as well. Advanced auto pilot relies on waypoints projected out in front of the boat, in waves and rough water your boat is moving out of position more than you realize I believe.

The motor is compensating for the movement. You see the side to side action because the base of the motor is moving out of position in relation to the head of the motor so it turns to compensate for the smallest misalignment. Very accurate system from what I have seen with mine so far.

One other thing than can cause unnecessary corrections would be a weak gps signal. You can check that by the signal meter on the handheld display.

I absolutely love the ipilot and terrova. They hit a home run in my book so far with this system. I have been telling my friends this is the best thing to come out for a boat since the sonar.

Hey Minnkota how about a sponsorship

This ocsilation back and forth is to rapid to be GPS relocating direction of the boat I belive, think hiting the left and right buttons every second or two.

Considering the boat itself is not moving that fast, in fact we were almost at a dead stop going into the wind when we had our problem.

It would be more like the unit was hunting for direction or bearing, than correcting for course drift.
I’ll have to check the GPS signal, you may be right on that.

Yes, they may have hit a home run with the I pilot, but I’m wonering if there’s a few problem area’s here.
So far I’m giving them a triple and not the round trip.

Not throwing away the older gimbal unit quite yet.
