Good morning,
I have always been hesitant to travel with my boat in order to fish. Primarily fear of leaving the boat unattended in the evening while I eat or sleep.
What do travelers do for boat or gear security on trips/tournaments?

Sleep with one eye open and make sure that you have a full mag in your pistol if any one tries any thing. The best thing you can do is not leave anything of value on or in the boat and if you can LOCK every compartment you can. I always take my stuff into the hotel room with me and park my rig in a well lit area where alot of people are going to see it if some thing happens. Other than that there is really no safe and secure way to promise that nothing will happen. Good Luck

It all depends on where I am at. There are places where I don’t take anything out of the boat, just leave it tied up at the dock. There are other places where EVERYTHING comes out every night. Graphs, rods, boxes, you name it, it all comes into the cabin or hotel room and then I cover up the empty boat. Having a big lab in the back of my pick up is a good security feature, if nothing else he will lick someone to death
If your in doubt, take all your gear out
Some have put a baby monitor in their boat and then cover it up. My issue with that would be having to many and sleeping right through it.

I take everything out and into the hotel room. Some things I may leave in the truck as I feel if someone is willing to break into a locked vehicle, their going to get it anyway. But leaving a graph or trolling motor, rods or tackle out in plain sight I’m just not ever comfortable with. Lower value things I will lock in the lockable boat compartments.
Basically take a look at what you have and determine what level of risk you’re willing to put up with. Boat, car, hotel room.
I like the baby monitor idea but be careful not to confront someone in the act. Save that for law enforcement because insurance can’t pay back your life. Be safe!!

In the last 12 years with my boat I have taken lots and lots of trips. I have never had anything stolen. Dont let that stop you from taking some adventures. Life is too short.
Make sure your insurance is up to date and covers your stuff.
I like the baby monitor idea too.
Thanks for the feedback. How about kicker motor and front trolling motor? Has there been much theft out there?
Joe
I’ve heard of guys having their kicker stolen while stopping to get lunch on the way to or from fishing, so yes, it happens.
I knew a guy once that had a sail boat and pulled it around in his rig that had a base cannon stereo. He went to Chicago and overnight they stole both is car and his boat. They recoverd the car but the sail boat was never seen again. His car was no longer usable they think the perps launched the boat by driving the car into the landing car first.

It might be fun to do that once in a guy’s life!
Of course nice day, warm water, etc.
Just arrived at my destination for the weekend. The boat is all tucked away. Electronics are in the house as well as everything else I couldn’t lock up. All compartments are locked. Not much more you can do. Other than enjoy the weekend.
