Hi guys, I am thinking of buying a chartplotter after being in my buddies boat on lbdn last fall. He had one and they are great!!I am looking at the lowrance 5000c and was wondering how important the pixel count (320×240) is as this unit is lower than others. Also what units or brand do you use and why. Thanks for the help tight lines~~~~~~~snappin

Mel – Welcome to the site!

Pixel count does matter for cleaer definition on your GPS screen. The 5000c has a very good pixel count for a color unit. You might also look at the 3300C which will save you about $300. It has the same pixel count. The screen is 5″ diag. instead of 6″, so you get a slightly smaller screen but a higher pixel per square inch count. That should mean a clearer picture for less money. Use the extra money to add a Navionics chart or a ReelBottom mapping chart. The 3300C is due to be released soon.

The other unit I’d suggest anyone take a good look at is the soon-to-be-released Garmin GPSMAP 172C. The 172C has 320 x 320-pixel color screen (4.5″ diagonal). That’s going to be a really nice unit for around $600. It should be released by Garmin in the next month or so.

Here’s the previews on these two color units:

    Garmin 172C

    Lowrance 3300C

I’m sure we can get a few other guys to offer their favorites here too. Good luck!
