My 20 year old trolling motor is showing it’s age, time to upgrade. Here’s my ? how much thrust is too much?
I have a mid 80’s 14’Lund that currently has a Minnkota with 28 lbs. thrust (transom mount). I use it mostly for vertical jigging,so slow is key!!
    thanks for your help

I have a forty lb. minnkota on my 14 footer and I personally think it is to much for that boat. It’s great for fishing on lakes that don’t allow motors but for fishing presentations I think it’s to much even on the lowest setting.

I recently upgraded the trolling motor on one of my small 16′ boats. I had an old 36# Minnkota and bought a small 45# Minnkota Traxxis to replace it. The reason I went with the Traxxis was for the unlimited variable speed. If you’re vertical jigging or rigging the 5 speeds forward and 3 reverse speeds the Endura models offered wouldn’t cut it for me.

I thought I’d love the Traxxis but it turned out the quality was nowhere near that of my 20 year old 36# Minnkota I was planning on getting rid of. I had the Traxxis on my boat for about two weeks and sold it. It was Junk in my opinion. I still plan on replacing it, but this time I think I’m going with a heavier Traxxis or Vector. I thought a 55# motor would be over kill but they don’t make em like they used to. I’d recommend going larger than smaller.

Too much thrust? No such thing!!

One thing you should definitely look at it is a motor with variable speed. If you get a beefier motor, and you should, you’ll have the power when you need it, but you can always dial it down to whatever setting you need at any given time. I personally think it’s always good to have more than what you need so it’s there if it’s needed, rather than not have the extra when it IS needed.

You can never have too much thrust… at least that is what she said.

I have a small 14′ shallow v boat for the rivers. I went with a 55 lb., and having that power when I need it is awesome. Yes its a little to much power for such a small boat, but I can beat any current so far. Its fun making a wake with your trolling motor.

Go big or go home!!! You won’t ever regret putting to big of a motor on your boat but you wil however regret one that is to small..

You can never have too much thrust and go with a variable speed. Not only is it more useful it also helps battery life. The one place that many people try to save money is on the electric trolling only to regret it. Go with as much as your pocket book allows.

You could have too much if you owned a really cheap cheesey made boat, and the motor pulled the mounting bolts right out of the boat because it was too thin to handle it.

Easy to turn the knob and make it slow down…….Don’t make the mistake of not getting a big enough trolling motor.
