Spinning/baitcasting reel question.

Question for you guys. I’ve been throwing around the idea of picking up a bait casting setup. I can cast blades, plugs and spoons with my spinning gear.

However I have a question. What’s the benefit to the bait caster? What can it do that a spinning reel can’t?

The thing that I use the baitcaster for is heavy lures, heavy lines and need for extra force in heavy cover. When finnessing I will always use my spinning rig.

A baitcaster has a LOT more control than a spin rod…Vertical jigging blades with a baitcaster is really easy and effective…you can adjust to the varying depth with your thumb instantly.

I am planning on trying a 7’3″ MLXF baitcaster for casting small 1/8-1/4 oz blades with 6# braid this year. You have great control and the longer length keeps more line off the water.

PS…I have a couple nice ones priced very reasonably on the classifieds right now…

    Benefits for a walleye angler…

It can handle fluorocarbon line much better than a spinning reel, so if you fish clear waters or have other needs that require fluorocarbon, a baitcaster is really nice for that purpose.

A baitcaster can also handle heavier line and heavier/larger baits much better than a spinning reel. So if you throw some larger cranks or spoons, or you get into heavy cover, a baitcaster is nice to have.

They also work great for pulling three-way rigs.

Agree with above posts. I’ll add that a BC reel has no line twist problems like a spinning reel. I believe I can cast farther with less effort.

I use BC set ups for everything except bobber fising. And now that I think of it, I’m going to give it a try!
