I know I have seen some posts or walkthroughs on how to do this, but I can’t for the life of me find them.

I am looking to paint my rod and was wondering if anyone had a walkthrough on materials to use and steps to take.

    Thanks in advance!

There is a special paint sold by Jann’s Netcraft or Mudhole for painting rods. I’ve never used it but know of a rod builder friend who has used it. I’m not impressed with the results.

I have seen some that were painted by the private sector. They were airbrushed and sealed, but they were more a piece of art than a fishing rod.

I have dabbled with it a bit and have had best results with black, I dont remember the brand I used tho. You got my curiosity up ,so I may have to give it a go once again.

Yeap – I’m looking to go black – Im thinking that I sand the rod down with a smoother sand paper? Tape it off – then paint?

    Sound about right?

I gather you still have guides on it then ? It is MUCH easier to do with NO guides or tip on tho.

Yeah – guides are still on there.

If you’re asking because the rod is scratched or worn looking, there are products that you can use to restore a rod’s finish such as Gudebrod Rod Restorer.

If you want to paint this to dress up the rod’s color, I don’t think you’ll be happy with the results of painting it with the guides on. You’ll also void the warranty on most rods by painting the blank, not to mention adding weight, and somewhat dampening the action.

Rod builders in the know mix TESTORS gloss enamel paint with their rod finish to create extraordinary colored/marbled wraps. Experiment with marbling, paint your rod blanks, exercise your creativity! Also know for painting model cars

My problem with this is… it causes a undesired heavy coat, thicker than the norm.

Why are you painting the rod? Decorative or something practical like painting a rod white for better contrast at night? I paint the first joint of all my rods white for night fishing. I just take a rag and rub it down with alcohol to remove any grease, dirt, whatever then spray it with auto undercoat. Very durable, thin coat and makes the rod come alive at night.

Decorative? I don’t do that, but I appreciate what others are able to do. Just not my thing.
