My son has been saving quite a while for a baitcaster reel. He has a couple low end baitcasters Black Max and Calisto but they really don’t seem to perform very well with lighter lures. He is thinking about going for a Revo or Curado. I thought I would post here to see what folks think is a good value in a quality reel that will last him for years and permit him to cast stuff as light as 3/16 or 1/4 ounce?

Seems like with the stuff he has so far it either backlashes or he gets no casting distance. He is hoping to pick something up at the Madison Fishing Expo in a couple weeks so hopefully by then we will have some good choices for him to consider.

I bought a revo s this last summer and its the best casting baitcaster I have ever had… With that said, I havent had very many bait casters, but this things casts 10X easier than my cheaper shimano model. I Know curado’s are good, but I think the revo s model that i bought is atleast $50 cheaper than a curado.

I have pretty good luck with the Pflueger President with light stuff. Make sure the rod is right also.

I’ve been using Quantum PT for years. You can get a KVD model from BPS with 10 bearings for $99. Works great for me. Good luck with your choice.

You want to buy a reel with a low inertia spool to throw the lighter lures on a baitcaster. I use a Daiwa Pixie for those applications but they are spendy. Send your sone here to get some “reel” expert feedback on this topic: Tackle Tour Reel Forum

I bought the original Quantum Ti series reel over 10 years ago for lighter, finesse lures for Smallmouth up here in our gin clear lakes. They work marvelous…The Pixie and Conquest are awesome but more $$$…but the other key (as mentioned above) is the rod action. Forget the Heavy or Med heavy, stiff rods you use for most other bass applications

I picked up a St. Croix LTBC68MXF / TOP WATER rod and found it to be a perfect match for my Ti reel and I can throw as light as a #9 Rapala or 1/4oz Tiny Torpedo with ease on 8# braid or 10# flouro…also dynamite on smaller swim baits or spinner baits.

While casting small jigs for smallmouth I usually pick up a 7ft med action techna av with a revo (black adjustable model?) loaded with 10 lb flurocarbon. Even in the wind this set-up is amazingly forgiving! This is a great tournment rig for clearwater.

you should pair whatever reel you have to a rod with a good tip. you need some snap to get those ligher lures going

Line plays a big part in casting light lures. For my setup I picked up a Megaforce Plus and a Scheels Walleye Series 7 foot medium with a moderate tip, with Power Pro 10# test line.

I was looking for a rod and reel combination that could do double duty, the twiching bar for jigging and casting lighter lures for bass and snot rockets. With this set up I can cast 1/8 ounce jig with ease or throw on a spinner bait or crankbait amd the rod has enough backbone to handle the bigger lures.

Have fun in your search for that perfect setup…and have fun

check out a Daiwa Sol. They are $249 regular but you can find them on sale for the $175 mark. I bought mine for $125. They are built specifically for light lures. I coupled it with a Carrot stik Gold medium parabolic action and it is one fine unit.

Thanks for the tips on the reels. The fishing expo is next weekend. I don’t know if I will be able to get my hands on a BPS reel there to check out but I would think the others should be around to check out.
