Motor Question

I have recently sold the 60hp 2 stroke tiller that was on my boat. The hull is rated up to 60hp, and thats where this question arises.

Considering a 2 stroke’s bit more “snappy” of a performance as compared to a 4 stroke’s, would it be foolish to pass up a great deal on a 70hp? (yes 10 over the hp rating)

There is about 80lbs difference in dry weight of either motor.

I would like to hear your thoughts.

    Thanks in advance,

While the 70 would be nice, you may want to talk to your insurance agent first. This subject comes up from time to time, in effect the 70 would be over the hull rating, so an insurance problem could happen and result in denial of a claim. That 60hp niche is a tough one, since almost all of them are based on smaller 40-50hp powerheads.

Well, to add fuel to the fire. The boat is rated 60hp tiller or 85hp console.

That is tough. Sounds like that the rating is just based mainly on weight distribution. As far as insurance, if u don’t insure I would probly be ok, but if u do insure call them. But on the otherhand they often do cover “stipidity”. Not that putting a motor between rating is stupid. Call ins would be best way I guess.

You may want to check with the DNR too. I know you can get in trouble by having a motor on your boat that is bigger than what your boat is rated for. You may never get caught but if you do, you will need to replace the motor and that could cost you a lot more in the end.

A new set of Motor stickers that say 60 on it should fix the problem.

I wouldn’t do it. As stated above, between the insurance liability, insurance coverage issues and the DNR – you are just asking for trouble down the road.
Also when you are trying to sell the boat this would cause issues. A dealer isn’t going to take it in that way – the only way they could sell it would be to take the motor off and put the correct size on the boat.
