Used my lx 5 for the 2nd time and had some issues. Fished Fri. for about 4 hours and had to keep turning up the gain. Today started with 60-70% battery and never did pick up my jig on the screen. Shut it off and fished blind. Battery is new but seems that the unit takes too much battery to run such a short time. Any ideas?

Any time you have to keep turning up the gain on a flasher more than likely it is a power issue. You should be able to fish an entire weekend on a good battery. That’s where I’d start to look given the description of the issues you’re having. If you’ve got another battery or a buddy with a known good battery… give it a swap out and see if that doesn’t fix things. I’d be willing to bet it does.

I’ve had new batteries right from the store that have been bad. I’d have to think it’s an issue with the battery as well. I’m far from an expert on the LX5’s but I have three of them and I can get a few days out of them before I even need to think about charging them. The easiest thing to do would be to switch batteries with someone for the day to see if your issues continue.

I agree fully! at least 2 twelve hour days before a thought on charging

I will probably buy another battery since I have an lx-3 and a camera also. Thanks for the help.

If its not the battery, It could be a transducer issue. Before I got my LX5 I had a pre tc LX3 that was doing the same thing you described. A new transducer fixed it.

I had a defective battery on my new LX-5….one of those blowout specials last Spring. Marcum had a new battery at my doorstep in 2 days. Great Service…and great machine.

My vote is on the transducer. I had the same problem with my LX3. Had to turn the gain way up to find the jig and it burnt the bat up fast. New transducer fixed both problems.

For what it’s worth turning up the gain actually doesn’t increase the output from the transducer or increase the rate at which the battery is drawn down. The output from the transducer is always the same… increasing the gain actually increases the sensitivity of the receiver. So ramping up the gain won’t have any impact on the run time of your battery.

Not that it matters… you’re up and running again and that’s what counts.
