I am in the market for a new jigging rod. I would like to get a GLoomis. I am having a hard time deciding between the SJR 721 or 722.
I fish mostly these conditions with my jig rod:

    Walleyes
Rivers mostly… ( DesMoins River in Iowa and the Mississippi Pool 4 at Red Wing) Walleyes
but not really fishing below the dams. I like to fish down stream around some calmer sections and eddys
depths of 2 to 15 feet with moderate current
Vertical jigging to fan casting ( Mostly casting
1/4 to 5/16 oz hair jigs
sometimes with minnow sometime not …sometimes twister tails
I like to use Power Pro 10/2

I have an older St Croix LMS 6’M that I have had for 20 years , it is working great but is a little on the stiffer side, but have caught alot of fish with it. I am kindof leaning towards the 721 becouse of the fact it will be a little on the lighter side. Both the GLoomis rods seem to be in the area that I am looking for as far as lure weight but differ a little with the line weight.

The GLoomis site says this about the 721……..
We designed the 721 specifically to fish lightweight jigs, grubs and minnow-type hard baits. This model is perfectly balanced for 8-pound line and 1/4-ounce lures, but it’s versatile enough to go up or down a line and still feel good

Can you shed some light on my choice ?
    SJR 721 or SJR 722 ?

    Thanks
    Mike

I’ve never owned a 722. I’ve owned several 721’s. They’re very good vertical jig rods… as good as anything out there. I did not like my 721 for pitching at all as I tend to lean towards longer rods. But in the straight up and down yo-yo presentation that 721 will do you fine.

For pitching – Mono I like a 6’8″ MXF. Braided line I like the 6’9″ MLXF. For dragging I’m coming around to longer rods as I’m always the guy on the bow and the longer rods give me a better reach out to the sides. Lately I’ve been using a 7’6″ MLXF St. Croix Tournament and really liking that rod.

Loomis quality has suffered greatly since being bought out by Shimano. St. Croix MLXF 6’9″ either in Avid or Tournament get my vote. Like the 6’8″ better for dragging.

i own sever 721 GLX’s and before owned IMX’s – as james said they are near the top of the list for a pure vertical jigging rod. I also like a longer rod if I am going to pitch or drag.

if you are using fireline (or similiar) look at the loomis walleye series. i am using their 751S – 6’3″ mag light w/ an extra fast tip. I have used it for jigs as heavy as 3/4 oz in the detroit river and it’s a great value purchase.

Good luck with your decision and if you can try before you buy that is the ultimate purchase experience!

Call Thorne Bros and have them make a custom 6’6″ rod with a 3″ extension –
Talk to the rod building guys

    You will be amazed.

    Perfect for your application.

I’ve jigged with an IMX SJR 722 for many years. It’s been a solid verticle and snap jigging rod. Baby’s got back to bury a heavier jig.

The 6’6″ Limit Creek LCS66MF is another rod to consider. It’s similar to the Loomis SJR782 and less than half the cost.

You can never compare a Limit Creek to a Loomis, they are not even close to the same class of rod.

I would go with the lighter action if using hardline, the heavier action if mono is your go-to IMO.I have a 722 that I used for many years, and was pretty darn versatile.

If your going vertical I’d check out the 5’9″ St Croix Avid medium power x fast action. Great vertical jigging rod.

Thanks everyone for their suggestions. Think will go with the 721 IMX.
    Thanks again
