Which chip shows most detail of the Mississippi?

Among the various sd cards available, do any show more detail than the others? Do folks who fish the Mississippi find gps capability on your fishfinders helpful?

    Welcome to Ido Mr. Jonas!

Since I don’t know what pools you’re fishing it’s a little hard to be exact. LakeMaster is a sponsor of our site so most of my personal experience has come from using their products. I have used Navionics about 3 or 4 years ago.

One item to remember is that we are talking about a river. Rivers are always changing, so what might be spot on today, may change tomorrow and almost certainly will after next springs flooding. Case in point. Last year a location was over 10 feet deep, LakeMaster says 11. This year there are times when I could walk on the sand without getting my feet wet.

Now with that out of the way…

LakeMaster has the 1 foot contours. I find this very helpful in looking for breaks and holes when I’m looking at new areas for cat and sturgeon fishing. I would guess the same would apply for walleyes.

Click on the LakeMaster banner on the left side of this web page, check if the area you’re looking at fishing is listed. Pool 3 of the Miss is not listed…although we are working at getting that changed!

PS the St Croix is pretty darn close on my LakeMaster chip, when I had a Nav…well I boated over catfish bar many times.

    Thanks Brian

Right now I am fishing pools 5, 5a and 6 the most. Would the Wisconsin chip cover the river, or would I have to get Minnesota too? I also noticed on the Lakemaster site they do not mention humminbird. Is Lakemaster not compatable with humminbird?

Welcome to the site Peter. In 07 I picked up a MN lakemaster chip for fishing on mille lacs. Little did I know how great it would be to have that chip on pool 2. The marked wingdam locations on it is fantastic. Makes it a snap for dropping anchor and knowing you are in the rite spot. Cant say i ever use the depths marked on the chips for the river. Water levels in the river change to much. Maybe in the future I might find a better use for the depth markings.

Either the WI or MN chips will cover all of the Mississippi River in that area.

As for Humminbird compatibility… those chips will be released on October 1.

This years LM shows wing dams in excruciating detail. Like it a lot.

This post should give you an idea what Lakemaster has to offer on the river.

The accuracy of the position of the wingdams has been “spot on” in my experience.

    Dear James

Thanks a ton for the link. It really gives me an excellent idea of what I would be getting with Lakemaster, which seems the clear choice. Also–thanks to all the rest for weighing in.
